Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 14

Standings implications: changing of the guard atop of the standings as Juventus stumbled against Sassuolo and Inter took full advantage with a two-one victory over SPAL. Lazio keep dominating and trashed Udinese in this round, while Roma prevailed on a difficult pitch like Verona’s one. Atalanta returned to form with by manhandling Brescia away, instead Napoli’s issues continue as they were upended at home by the middling Bologna. Torino and Milan obtained gritty slump-busting Ws against Genoa and Parma, while Lecce again showed off their ability on the road with a one-nil win in Florence.

Confirmations: Ciro Immobile continues to produce like clockwork and had a brace in this round, with Luis Alberto joining him in the stat-sheet thanks to a penalty. Lautaro Martinez is in stellar form and tacked two more to his seasonal tally to down the Estensi. Josip Ilicic had a superb display against Brescia and was rewarded with a late goal. Francesco Caputo and Jeremie Boga both delivered despite the uber-difficult match-up, in marvellous fashion in the case of the speedster, who bagged a chip shot. Joao Pedro and Radja Nainggolan made their presence felt in Cagliari’s superb comeback. Gaston Ramirez is in pretty good form as well.

Guess who is back: Fabio Quagliarella finally broke the ice and he netted two while he was at it. Cristiano Ronaldo resumed scoring after a month by drilling a penalty. Fernando Llorente had not netted one since the second round and Nicola Sansone ended a simillar drought, while Andreas Skov Olsen, who was productive abroad, scored his first Italian goal in that game. Diego Perotti happened to be on the pitch when Roma were awarded a penalty and he converted it, as he is one to do. The returning Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Justin Kluivert also contributed to the win. Mattia Valoti took advantage of the fact that he was playing in a very offensive position to slot one home with surgical precision.

Surprise scorers: Mario Pasalic cashed in on a run of consecutive appearances and put together a brace against Brescia. Bremer decided the Genoa game with a pretty header on a corner kick. Leonardo Bonucci sunk one from deep for a defender.

Flops of the round: Dries Mertens uncharacteristically wasted a major chance from great position. Brescia are stuck in L town, while Fiorentina dropped three matches in a row. Udinese put up very little resistance against Lazio and their defence was woeful.

Clutch goal: Theo Hernandez came through in a critical spot for the Rossoneri with his third goal of the season, the first in a month’s time, but Alberto Cerri outdid him there, winning it all at the buzzer.
