Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 20

Standings implications: Juventus gained a couple of points on Inter as they eked out a W over Parma, while the Nerazzurri were held to a tie by Lecce. Lazio romped their way to their 11th win in a row against Sampdoria. Roma bounced back with a pretty decisive success in Genoa put three points between them and Atalanta, which were stunned at home by SPAL. Milan outlasted Udinese to move closer to the top six and Fiorentina’s turnaround is starting to feel real after a fairly impressive display in Naples, with the Partenopei instead still in the doldrums. Cagliari at least got a point out of the trip to Brescia, while Bologna and Verona shared the spoils. Sassuolo came back to life by upending Torino.

Confirmations: Ciro Immobile bagged a hat-trick, Cristiano Ronaldo a brace and there is not much more to be said about their campaigns. Felipe Caicedo and Andreas Cornelius delivered again, confirming to be two of the best plug-and-play contributors in Serie A. The unheralded Joao Pedro keeps producing and tacked two more to his tally. Karol Linetty had a consolation goal and he is picking it up big time on the offensive end lately. Dusan Vlahovic tallied his fourth goal in the past two months in stunning fashion. Edin Dzeko showed up for La Lupa, while Goran Pandev‘s goal turned out to be just a blip. Josip Ilicic scored another classy goal, but Andrea Petagna and Mattia Valoti engineered the comeback.

Guess who is back: Federico Chiesa’s return to the stat-sheet not surprisingly coincided with La Viola faring better. Jeremie Boga’s inconsistency is maddening but when he is on, he is capable of extraordinary goals like the one against the Granata, Domenico Berardi instead punched one home putting behind him a silly suspension. Kevin Lasagna did damage after four scoreless rounds. Ernesto Torregrossa had a tremendous brace after striking out in the past five fixtures. Marco Mancosu resurfaced after months to semi-upsed Inter. Cengiz Under has big shoes to fill and he came through right away.

Surprise scorers: Bastos took advantage of the sorry state of the Sampdoria back-line to net his first of the season, same achievement for another centre-back, Alessandro Bastoniin Lecce. Jens Stryger Larsen had yet to score as well but was involved in both Udinese goals at San Siro. Mattia Bani often makes his presence known on set pieces and nudged one through this time, but he got sent off later on. Fabio Borini paired his debut with the Scaligeri with his first score.

Flops of the round: Inter could not take advantage of a very poor defence. Mario Balotelli fell into his old ways with a regrettable red card against Cagliari that will cost him multiple games. Omar Colley had a particularly rough day versus Lazio, falling asleep on two goals and causing a penalty.

Clutch goal: an unlikely hero powered Milan on Sunday as Ante Rebic scored twice off the bench, winning it at the buzzer after dancing his way through defenders.
