Serie A Club of the Round – Lazio

Lazio had a field day against Sampdoria and took home the coveted award despite giving up a consolation goal, as they pushed their winning streak to 11 in commanding fashion.

Simone Inzaghi had Joaquin Correa available this week, but he kept him initially on the bench coming off a calf injury, so Felipe Caicedo partnered Ciro Immobile up front, while Jony replaced the suspended Senad Lulic on the left wing. Claudio Ranieri kept the slightly banged up Fabio Quagliarella on the bench, which pretty much tipped how things were going to unfold.

The match was a no-contest as, after mid-range shot by Luis Alberto finished just wide, the Eagles scored their first half after seven minutes: Immobile escaped past the back-line on a long ball, resisted Julian Chabot and Bartosz Bereszynski’s attempts to slow him down but his shot was denied by the goalie, however Omar Colley waited too long to get to the loose ball and Caicedo tucked it home.

Immobile got his first goal ten minutes late on a penalty after a cross by Manuel Lazzari was stopped by a handball by Nicola Murru. It took him just 180 seconds more to have a brace on an action similar to the first goal, as Francesco Acerbi found with an accurate long ball, but this time he left Chabot in his tracks, dribbled Emil Audero and knocked it on goal. The goalie then slapped away a devious loft by Alberto.

The Biancocelesti opened the second half with the same fierceness and added one, as Bastos was left all alone following a set piece and easily blasted it home on a through ball by Lucas Leiva. Alberto’s quest for a goalie was instead denied twice by slides by defender and the second one led to another penalty for a handball, which Immobile coolly canned in impeccable manner.

The only blemish of the day was conceding at the 70th minute, as Karol Linetty put the rebound through after Thomas Strakosha saved a Manolo Gabbiadini effort. Chabot hit the showers early for a professional foul on rookie Bobby Adekanye. Immobile could have added one more but missed the mark on a one-on-one.

Lazio are two points behind the second-placed Inter but will soon play a make-up game versus Verona. Their top dog dominated this week with is 14-point haul, also getting points were Bastos and Caicedo for scoring and Leiva for setting up a teammate.
