Premier League Best 11 Players of the Weekend: Matchday 1

The new English Premier League season kicked off last weekend with defending champions Liverpool starting in a 4-3 thriller over newly-promoted Leeds United. The weekend started with Manchester City and Manchester United, who were given an extra week’s rest due to their involvement in European campaigns abroad last month.

With eight games played here’s a look at the players who made a real difference over the weekend. Did you have them in your team? Do you have them this weekend maybe?

Goalkeeper: Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace) – 7pts
Six goalkeepers started the new season with a clean sheet and one of the biggest surprises was Crystal Palace’s 1-0 win at home to Southampton. Vicente Guaita made a couple of important stages towards the end to maintain his shut out and three points for Roy Hodgson’s side.

Defender: Reece James (Chelsea) – 12pts
The youngster showed his worth as Chelsea’s starting right-back on Monday night with a goal and assist and the second overall points scorer in the fantasy round, despite not keeping a clean sheet. Reece James’ strike that gave the Blues a 2-1 lead is an early candidate for goal of the season too.

Defender: Kurt Zouma (Chelsea) – 9pts
Despite Chelsea investing a lot of money in attack over the summer, it was two defenders who got among the goals. With the aid of a big deflection, Kurt Zouma’s volley from a corner secured the Blues’ three points on his way to an impressive points score.

Defender: Lucas Digne (Everton) – 9pts
The only defender with a clean sheet to make the top point scorers in the opening round of fixtures, Lucas Digne’s free kick that was headed in by Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the only goal as Everton beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Defender: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) – 8pts
There won’t be too many gameweeks that you’ll see a defender in team of the week after conceding three goals but Virgil van Dijk scored in Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Leeds Untied to make it in. The Netherlands star also had a goal ruled out in the game.

Midfielder: Jeff Hendrick (Newcastle United) – 12pts
Jeff Hendrick was the catalyst for Newcastle United’s 2-0 win at West Ham United on Saturday night. The free transfer from Burnley setup Callum Wilson for a goal on his debut before a sweet strike settled the match late on.

Midfielder: Jorginho (Chelsea) – 9pts
A goal from the penalty spot and an assist in the opening match of the season earned Jorginho a place in the team of the week. Among a star studded Chelsea attack, 14% of players still picked the Italian in their team.

Midfielder: Roman Saiss (Wolverhampton Wanderers) – 9pts
Wolves went 2-0 up away to Sheffield United in the opening six minutes of their clash at Bramall Lane on Sunday. Roman Saiss headed the second of those home from a corner and had other opportunities in the match as well.

Striker: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – 13pts
A hat-trick for Mohamed Salah in the 4-3 win over Leeds saw the Egyptian top score for the opening weekend of games.

Striker: Willian (Arsenal) – 9pts
Two assists on his debut since moving across London from Chelsea over the summer, Willian was also involved in Arsenal’s opening goal in their 3-0 win away to Fulham.

Striker: Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) – 9pts
Two penalties in the 3-0 win away to West Bromwich Albion earned Jamie Vardy a place in the team of the week.
