Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round Eight

Standings implications: Milan emegered victorius in the monumental clash with Napoli, as their title bid gains credibility in each round. 2nd-placed Sassuolo kept it rolling and bested Verona away, which is no easy feat. The other top teams did not stumble in feasible fixtures as Roma crushed Parma, Juventus romped Cagliari even though the result was not very large, Lazio cruised past Crotone, while ‘Pazza Inter’ was on full display against Torino as they mounted a four-goal comeback in the second half. Atalanta dropped the ball versus Spezia and could not get more than a nil-nil tie.

Bologna got a quality win against Sampdoria on the road. Benevento ruined Cesare Prandelli’s return on Fiorentina’s match with a slump-busting win. Udinese held on to dear life to their narrow lead against Genoa, separating themselves for the bottom positions.

Confirmations: fantasy giants Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all added two more goals to their tallies, while Ciro Immobile shook off the recent controversies with a diving header in Crotone. Lautaro Martinez made the stat-sheet for the second consecutive game. Domenico Berardi found the target for the fourth time in the season. Riccardo Orsolini is starting to find a little bit of consistency and he has picked up bonus in three of the last four matches, hitting the net twice. Same haul for Rodrigo De Paul.

Guess who is back: Joaquin Correa finally managed to put one past the goalie after a series of excellent performances, but without end product. First goal in Serie A play also for Alexis Sanchez, who capped off the Nerazzurri’s rally, and Jeremie Boga, who had struggled to get it going up to this point. Borya Mayoral this time filled in admirably for Edin Dzeko and broke the deadlock against Parma. Simone Zaza gave Torino some false hopes in San Siro. Dries Mertens made it back to the boxscore after a two-month absence, but Jens Petter Hauge finished the Partenopei off with his first goal in Italy.

Surprise scorers: Riccardo Improta picked an apt time for his first Serie A goal as he helped Benevento snap out of their funk in a tough spot. Cristian Ansaldi stepped up to the plate with Andrea Belotti missing and converted a glorious penalty kick. Morten Thorsby bagged his second in the year with a sneaky header.

Flops of the round: Atalanta’s offense was again rather subdued, but Spezia deserve some credit as well. Vasco Regini had a clumsy own goal that turned the tide of the Bologna tilt. Despite a two-nothing lead, Torino melted away as soon as Inter scored.
