AC Milan 2-2 Parma: Three things we learned as Hernandez secures draw in stoppage time

Milan managed to come back from a two-goal deficit against Parma this evening, eventually securing a 2-2 draw. Theo Hernandez was the big hero with a brace and thus extended the Rossoneri’s unbeaten run in the league, although they would have wanted the three points.

In addition to having a goal disallowed for a very close offside, Milan struck the woodwork four times (!) and also missed some good chances. For a very long time, and especially when Parma scored their second, it felt like it just wasn’t the Rossoneri’s day. Yet, they managed to fight back from a tough position.

With that in mind, in spite of the missed chances, Stefano Pioli should be happy with the performance. At least they got into many goalscoring positions, which the manager needs to lay the foundations for, but as far as accuracy goes he can’t do much. Down below are three things we learned.

1. They need to eliminate defensive errors

This was decisive today, as Parma essentially were gifted their two goals. On the first one, Franck Kessie covered the wrong area in the box and completely lost track of Hernani in the box. His teammates have to take part of the responsibility as well, seeing as the formation was off from the start in that situation.

On the second goal, Ismael Bennacer wasn’t able to catch up with Jasmin Kurtic, while the defenders’ positioning could have been better. Once again, the opponent was allowed way too much space in the box and this cost the Rossoneri the three points this evening, no doubt.

2. Additional injuries cause for concern

As if Milan didn’t already struggle with injuries, Matteo Gabbia and Ismael Bennacer were forced to leave the pitch early this evening. The defender suffered a blunt sprain trauma to his left knee after a strong challenge with Andreas Cornelius, visibly in pain when he was helped off the pitch.

The midfielder, meanwhile, is experiencing a muscle issue and he was taken off as a result of this. Fortunately, Pierre Kalulu and Sandro Tonali did well to replace the duo this evening, but the situation is still far from ideal. We can only hope that the medical exams will bring positive news.

3. Their strong mentality pays off

Milan were obviously aiming for the win, as already mentioned, but considering how the game developed the comeback is a very good sign. They just don’t give up this season and that is thanks to their impressive mentality, which has been instilled in the team by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer.

It would have been very tough to lose the unbeaten run in the league, especially considering the bad luck Milan had, but the draw will allow them to move forward without this pain. That being said, it’s clear that they need to be more composed next time out.
