Genoa 2-2 AC Milan: Late goal rescues Milan yet again as unbeaten run continues

Just like against Parma last time out, Milan scored a late goal to secure a 2-2 draw in the encounter with Genoa this evening, with two defenders getting on the scoresheet. Certainly not the result they were looking for, but at least they kept their unbeaten run going despite the many injuries.

The game didn’t start too well with several misplaced passes and sloppy play in general, with the poor pitch perhaps having an impact on the players. We had to wait until the 36th minute for the first chance, as Mattia Destro managed to find some space in the box and narrowly firing it wide.

That was just the beginning of his game, as we would see. Milan’s first chance came just one minute later as Ante Rebic did it all on his own, getting past the defence with a nice solo run. The effort, however, was saved by Mattia Perin and the feeling is that the Croatian could have done better.

Much like his teammate, Alessio Romagnoli, who managed to beat Perin to the ball on the following corner. Albeit from close range, and him needing to jump high, he had an open goal to aim at. The scores remained level as the referee blew for the half-time break, with the Rossoneri slightly ahead.

Just two minutes into the second half, though, Gigio Donnarumma was forced to pick one out of the net after initially doing really well. His great save looked to be decisive but Destro pounced on the rebound, scoring the first goal of the game. A blow for Milan, of course, who need to defend better.

When Davide Calabria decided to take matters into his own hands five minutes later, things were looking up for the Rossoneri. His long-range effort outsmarted Perin and Milan were back in it, hoping to score another and secure the win. Stefano Pioli, at this point, also made his first subs.

Once again, though, the Rossoneri’s defending did the damage as Destro easily headed in the 2-1 goal for Genoa with 60 minutes on the clock. Pierre Kalulu was beaten in the box, quite easily as well, and Pioli’s men were back to square one after what looked promising.

With seven minutes to go of the game, redeeming himself, Kalulu pounced on Alessio Romagnoli’s header and equalised for Milan. His first goal for the club, in his first Serie A start, but his performance certainly could have been better defensively. Had he not scored the rescuing goal, the story would have been very different.

Milan didn’t really have any good chances after that and the clash finished 2-2, with both sides disappointed not to have won. As Inter beat Napoli 1-0, the Rossoneri are under some pressure but the draw at least keeps them one point ahead of their city rivals – still at the top of the standings, therefore.
