The EuroFantasyLeague team of the Month is dominated by Premier League players in December, as natural given that they have had a higher amount of matches compared to any other nation. It took some research and some math to find them, but the two top performers in Italy over the last 30 days were actually two right-backs: Benevento’s Gaetano Letizia (19 points) and Inter’s Achraf Hakimi (18), as neither of the star strikers had a really super finish of 2020.
Letizia has benefitted greatly from the fact that Benevento have really tightened it up in the back, keeping three clean sheets in the past five rounds and that yield him 15 points. On top of that, he added one goal, a lovely strike from medium range versus Udinese, to make it richer. The Sanniti defender has already found the target three time in the season, which puts him in the top four of fantasy defenders, behind the studs Theo Hernandez and Hakimi and Alexis Saelemaekers, who actually plays as winger. His squad has had a great December and has been able to climb up the standings.
Since Letizia picked up most of his production on the defensive phase, he is joined for this month by Hakimi, who has been one of the signature players in the League over the last few weeks. Inter has put together a seven-game winning streak and he has surely been instrumental in that, founding the target three times and providing one assist in the last five tilts.
It has taken him a minute to adjust, but over the last month he has been able to display the same brilliant repertoire he showcased at Borussia Dortmund. He may technically be a wing-back, but he surely finishes like a striker.
He bagged a brace against Bologna, concluding with great aplomb in front of the striker after slipping behind the offside trap on the first goal, and then slotting it home on the bottom corner with a lefty strike after cutting inside on the second one. But his best goal came versus Spezia, where he put a defender on the ground with a dummy and rifled it home on the near post with razor sharp daisy-cutter. He completed his offensive spoils with a pinpoint cross to set up a gorgeous volley by Lautaro Martinez against Hellas Verona, plus he racked up five more points and the Nerazzurri blanked Napoli.
After fairly a slow start, he has proven to be well worth the investment and he is tailor made to play in that position in Antonio Conte’s scheme.
