Are Manchester United suddenly Premier League title contenders?

Almost a year ago, a lackluster Manchester United team slumped to a 2-0 defeat to
Liverpool that would leave them 30 points adrift from the team that would eventually be
crowned champions of England. While the score may not have been as embarrassing,
Manchester United looked a pale shadow of their former selves.

The thought of even suggesting this team would be title contenders this year after being what seems like light years adrift of the eventual champions of 2019/20 appeared to be the stuff of fantasy. However, 12 months have seen Manchester United top the table after the 0-0 draw at Liverpool.

While the race is still tight, United have shown tremendous progress, which now begs whether they can be considered genuine title contenders.

United’s inconsistencies

One of the issues that may go against United is their inconsistency. While going to Anfield is always a fierce battle between these arch-rivals, United will feel they had a huge claim for victory. This is a Liverpool side that has been hit by injuries and going through one of their worst winless streaks since 2005 having failed to find the net in their past three games.

It will be remembered that after that timid visit to Liverpool, Manchester signed Bruno
Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon. While he has been an inspiration to this United team, there has certainly been a resurgence, and almost all players have suddenly gained confidence.

They now work together as a unit showing hard work and organization, which seemed to be lacking before. Going into this game against Liverpool, United initially looked like a team set up not to lose. However, as the game wore on, they grew in confidence, and their manager believes they could have easily won this fixture. Are they really title contenders?

Manchester United have not lost their last 16 away games. After losing 1-0 to Arsenal at
home on 1st November, United had 7 points from 6 games and was 15th in the table
standings. Fast-forward to January, and they are up there on the table with the rest of the leading pack. This shows how far they have come, and if their latest performances and statistics are anything to go by, they will be firm contenders for the Premier League title this season.

However, it will be remembered that they have lost four semi-finals, which may
seem to suggest they lose games that really matter. At this stage of the competition, the race to the title proves thrilling and unpredictable. It could even be argued that 4 or 5 teams could easily win the title, which shows how open it is. For teams chasing the crown, they will know any slip up could be costly. In the meantime, it may seem fair to suggest that United have a real shot at the title considering their current position in the table.
