Premier League Best 11 Players of the Weekend: Matchday 3

Leicester City caused the biggest upset in gameweek 2 as Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win away to Manchester City. Later that night, West Ham United thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0.

Here’s a look at the players who made a real difference in the fantasy football last weekend:

Goalkeeper: Emi Martinez (Aston Villa) – 7pts
The Argentinian goalkeeper has started his Aston Villa career with back-to-back clean sheets as part of the side that won 3-0 at Fulham on Monday. He’ll do well to make it three in a row this weekend when Dean Smith’s side face Liverpool.

Defender: Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa) – 11pts
Tyrone Mings scored the third as Aston Villa romped to victory at Craven Cottage. A clean sheet too for the centre-back, you can’t get much better than that combo.

Defender: Andy Robertson (Liverpool) – 9pts
Liverpool’s left-back gave his side the lead against Arsenal on Monday night after it was his mistake that gifted Mikel Arteta’s side the lead. Andy Robertson now has a goal, assist and clean sheet in his first three outings this season.

Defender: Arthur Masuaku (West Ham United) – 9pts
Anyone who was brave enough to include a West Ham defender in their team last weekend greatly profited with a surprise clean sheet versus Wolverhampton Wanderers. Arthur Masuaku outscored his fellow defenders by registering an assist too.

Midfielder: Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa) – 12pts
Aston Villa were two up inside 15 minutes at Fulham on Monday thanks to Conor Hourihane adding to Jack Grealish’s strike. The central midfielder also delivered the free kick that Tyrone Mings poked home just after half-time.

Midfielder: Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) – 10pts
Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring for Manchester City against his former club before Leicester City produced a stunning turnaround in a 5-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Midfielder: Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) – 9pts
Aston Villa’s first goalscorer in their 3-0 win at Fulham saw Jack Grealish make the fantasy Premier League team of the weekend.

Striker: Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) – 13pts
The fourth hat-trick of the 2020-21 Premier League season saw Leicester City thrash Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Sunday. This was Jamie Vardy’s versus the Citizens since the Spaniard has been in charge.

Striker: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United) – 11pts
Scorer of the opening two goals from West Ham United in their surprise 4-0 thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday earned Jarrod Bowen a place in the team of the week.

Striker: Callum Robinson (West Bromwich Albion) – 10pts
Callum Robinson only scored one goal in 17 Premier League appearances for Sheffield United last season but scored two in West Brom’s 3-3 draw with Chelsea this weekend. Unfortunately for the striker, he was taken off midway through the second half before he could grab a hat-trick.

Top Premier League Defenders in 2018/19 – Aymeric Laporte

Aymeric Laporte

Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte was the highest-scoring non-Liverpool defender in fantasy EPL last season.

The 25-year-old French centre-back joined Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team in January 2018 for €65 million from LaLiga’s Athletic Bilbao.

Since then, he has gone on to be recognised as one of the best defenders in the English Premier League with his consistent performances at the heart of the City backline.

At just 6.5 million, Laporte was a bargain for EPL fantasy managers last season. After impressing so well, his price is likely to increase before the 2019/20 campaign gets underway. Continue reading

Top Premier League Defenders in 2018/19 – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Hard as it may be to believe, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (TAA) is still only 20-years-old.

The right-back has already played in two Champions League finals, a World Cup, and been involved in an epic Premier League title race.

TAA was the third-highest scoring defender in 2018/19′s fantasy EPL game, just behind his Reds teammates – Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson.

He managed to accumulate 102 EPL fantasy football points from just 27 starts and two substitute appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side. Continue reading

Top Premier League Defenders in 2018/19 – Andrew Robertson

Andy Robertson

What a season Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has had. The 25-year-old left-back lifted the Champions League trophy last Saturday night with his team after they beat Premier League rivals Spurs 2-0 in the final in Madrid.

Domestically, Robertson has risen to be widely regarded as the best left-back in England and he showed this through his fantasy EPL performance for the season just finished.

Robertson – who captains his national team, Scotland – earned a total of 118 EPL fantasy football points meaning he finished as the second-highest scoring defender, just one point behind his Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk. Continue reading

No shame in second for Liverpool

Liverpool second Premier League Klopp Van Dijk Robertson Salah Mane

Bill Shankly famously said that finishing second is nothing. Even he, though, would have been tempted to revise that statement when discussing this current Liverpool team. Describing this team as failures would be cruel in the extreme.

While the overarching desire is to look back at this past season and mourn the death of another potential title win, the reaction should be the opposite. Liverpool should be celebrating a glorious campaign and the fact that it happened in the first place. Jurgen Klopp’s side have impressed beyond belief over the past year. Suggestions that they have done anything but succeed this season are not worth listening to. Klopp will certainly be sharing that message among his group.  Continue reading

Digne and Robertson battling for Premier League dominance

Digne-Robertson-Everton-Liverpool

It’s rare that two of the Premier League’s best players in a single position can be found playing on opposite halves of the same city. Yet, for Merseyside that is the case this season. Everton’s Lucas Digne and Liverpool’s Andy Robertson are both staking a claim to be the best left-backs in the division.

On the blue half of the city, there is Digne. The Frenchman arrived from Barcelona in the summer as a long-term replacement for Leighton Baines. That was an unenviable task given the status Baines had built for himself over 11 years at the club. It’s one Digne has completed in just under a year. If you need an example of how good he is, just head to statistics website WhoScored. Continue reading

Andy Robertson key to Liverpool’s Champions League hopes

Over the past year, Liverpool have spent £150 million in the transfer market. £37.8 million of that went on Mohamed Salah last summer, luring the Egyptian winger from Roma. £34.2 million was wired to Arsenal for the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with £71 million paid to Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk in January. Not much attention was paid to the £8 million spent on Andy Robertson.

The Scottish left back arrived at Anfield without much fanfare. He had impressed in the Premier League for Hull City the season before, but Robertson wasn’t a marquee signing. Most agreed that he was a shrewd signing, but he wasn’t categorised in the same way the signing of Salah was, and the signing of Van Dijk following that.

Since then, Robertson has become a key figure for Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Scot had to earn his place, with Alberto Moreno picked ahead of him for the early part of the season. Now, it’s difficult to envisage how Liverpool could possibly have overlooked Robertson at left back.

Robertson is in the form of his life. Many consider him to currently be the best left back in the Premier League, and at £8 million his signing last summer undoubtedly goes down as the bargain of the 2017/18 season. Now, he would cost about five times, at least, that. Liverpool played the market and won.

While Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have grabbed the headlines this season, and rightly so, they wouldn’t have reached such heights over the past few months without Robertson proving them with a supply line down the left side. The Scot has given Liverpool another attacking outlet. Sometimes, he is the fourth member of their attacking line, such is his natural attacking ambition.

In his first season at Liverpool, Robertson has sparked up a relationship with Firmino and Salah in particular. The 24-year-old has made a habit of bursting down the left wing and crossing for the back post, where he invariably finds the run of a teammate in red. It’s now muscle memory for the former Dundee United and Queen’s Park player.

Crossing might be the biggest strength of Robertson’s game. His deliveries are consistently wicked, more often than not pinpointed to find the run of a teammate. The Scot has gone a long way to solve some of the defensive issues Liverpool endured earlier in the season, but he has also become an integral component of their attack.

In many ways, Robertson embodies all that is good about Klopp’s team. In years gone by Liverpool faced criticism for their scouting, but the system worked in the identification of Robertson as a target. Robertson is young and dynamic and has grown as a player since making the move to Merseyside. He sets a precedent for others to follow. If Liverpool go on to win this season’s Champions League, Robertson will have been a key part of that success.
