Here are this weekend’s picks for your fantasy team:

Goalkeeper: David Soria (Getafe)

Difficult season ahead for Diego Simeone’s Atleti

Diego Simeone

They may have just broken their transfer record fee for Benfica’s Joao Felix but Atletico Madrid are facing a season of huge transition in 2019/20

Now almost eight years in charge at the club, Simeone could be facing one of his toughest years yet.

As well as Felix, Atleti have also brought in Marcos Llorente from their cross-city rivals and central-defender Felipe from FC Porto.

However, they have lost Rodri to Manchester City, Lucas Hernandez to FC Bayern in the Bundesliga, Gelson Martins to AS Monaco and, possibly most importantly of all, Diego Godin to Inter Milan in Serie A. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll also Continue reading

Atletico Madrid in the market for attacking options

Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is set for a busy summer in the transfer market, with the biggest exodus of his time in charge in La Liga, expected in the coming months.

The Argentinian is set to remodel his side for 2019-20, with experienced players moving on and uncertainty surrounding other players in the squad.

Defenders Diego Godin and Filipe Luis look increasingly likely to leave in the summer, when their contracts expire at the Wanda Metropolitano.

That means defensive reinforcements are a priority, in particular a replacement for Godin, who has been central throughout Simeone’s time in charge.

There are doubts over the futures of Saul Niguez and Rodri, with Manchester City interested in both midfielders – however Simeone is unlikely to let either leave, having worked so hard to keep them away from Barcelona in the past 12 months.

The main issue, alongside Godin, could be finding a fresh attacker to partner Antoine Griezmann.

The French international has committed his own future to the club, after another round of speculation linking him with Barcelona.

However, the club are looking to part ways with controversial striker Diego Costa, after he received a eight game following a red card against Barcleona earlier this month.

Simeone has been standoffish on the subject, claiming the Spanish international deserved to be punished, but remained ambiguous as to whether or not he was actually guilty.

The club’s hierarchy appear to have now lost patience, and want to move Costa on, and are willing to take a cut price offer for the former Chelsea man.

Gelson Martins is set to make his loan move to Monaco a permanent one at the end of the season, with Luciano Vietto set to head off to Portugal as a makeweight in the deal.

Alvaro Morata’s loan looks set to stand, with Chelsea’s attempts to recall him early due to their transfer ban, set to be rebuffed by FIFA – however he could go back to London at the end of the 2019-20 season.

That leaves just Griezmann, Morata and Nikola Kalinic, who has also been linked with an exit, as Simeone’s only strikers, unless he can make a move.

Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi could be the ideal fit to replace Costa, and act as a foil for Griezmann, however Simeone will have to battle Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to bring the Argentinian international in.

Atletico Madrid preparing for summer transfer overhaul

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid are set for a transfer shake up this summer, with the La Liga side preparing for a number of arrivals and departures from the Wanda Metropolitano in the coming weeks.

Diego Simeone will have his work cut out to keep some of his star names, with Los Rojiblancos set to end the season empty handed for another year, and the vultures will be circling over the Spanish capital.

French international Antoine Griezmann has confirmed that he will be remaining with the club, which has put an end to another potential summer of transfer speculation over a move to Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid refuse to give up in La Liga title race

Atletico Madrid

On Saturday evening last, Atletico Madrid had slipped 13 points behind La Liga’s leaders, Barcelona. The Catalan giants had beaten Espanyol 2-0 in the derby earlier in the day.

The pressure was on Diego Simeone’s side to keep the title race alive. Yes, all they can do is hope for Barcelona to drop points at this late stage of the season. But what have you got if you don’t have hope?

Atletico didn’t falter. They calmly dismantled Deportivo Alaves 4-0 at the Estadio de Mendizorroza.

No one would have expected such a scoreline at the home of an over-performing Continue reading

Week 29: Best 11 Players in Fantasy La Liga

OOOBBBBB(1)

It was a weekend where the top 3 clubs all won including two wins out of two for Real Madrid since Zinedine Zidane returned to the club. The full top six is still undecided as European places will be up for grabs. Below we take a look at the best 11 players who performed this past weekend in La Liga. Formation: 4-4-2.

Goalkeeper: Jan Oblak

Only 3 goalkeepers earned 7pts and Jan Oblak was one of them. Already in first position for goalkeepers Oblak had an outstanding game for Atletico Madrid as they destroyed Alaves 4-0 to stay in 2nd place ahead of their rivals Real Madrid. Want Oblak? Well he will cost you 11m but seems worth every penny.

Defender: Diego Godin

Staying with Atletico Madrid, one of the very best defenders to grace the Spanish league makes it into our team of the week and that is Diego Godin. Godin was part of a team that kept a clean sheet and earned 5pts and is valued at 9m.

Defender: Gerard Pique

Gerard Pique the Barcelona legend had a solid game at home and it was an important one as Barca beat their rival Espanyol 2-0 in the local derby. Pique earned 5pts and it was Barcelona’s first clean sheet in 2 games. Pique can be brought in for 7.5m and is currently the highest ranked defender.

Defender: Jose Gaya

Jose Gaya, the Valencia player earned 5pts as his team won a massive game away to Sevilla 1-0. Gaya’s performance was rock solid as Valencia try to cement a European place and he has had good consistency about him and can be bought for 6.5m.

Defender: Jonathan Silva

Jonathan Silva is the defender of the weekend as he earned the most points with 7. The Leganes player assisted for his sides first goal and kept a clean sheet as they beat Getafe 2-0. That was his 6th assist of the season and he is valued at 5m.

Midfielder: Juanfran

Juanfran had an excellent game as Leganes beat Getafe 2-0 and it was Juanfran who got his clubs winner, scoring a goal and helping his side to get a clean sheet too. Juanfran has only had 12 starts but might be finding his best form now and can be snapped up at 5.5m.

Midfielder: Daniel Parejo

It was all down to Parejo as his team beat Sevilla 1-0 and it was Parejo’s penalty that won the day for the away side. Parejo earned himself 6pts and can be brought into your team for 8.5m.

Midfielder: Thomas Partey

Not only did Thomas Partey play his part in keeping a clean sheet for Atletico Madrid but after the club went 3-0 up he rounded it up with his 3rd goal of the season to win the match for the club 4-0. He has been consistent this season and looks a steal at 6m.

Midfielder: Saul Niguez

Another Atletico Madrid player inclusion but richly deserved Saul Niguez opened up the scoring for his club which would lead into a 4-0 victory over poor Alaves. The player earned 6pts in the process and can be bought for 6.5m.

Striker: Iago Aspas

Iago Aspas is worth his weight in gold to Celta Vigo this past weekend as his 2 goals helped the team beat Villarreal 3-2 as they try to survive in La Liga with the skin of their teeth. Aspas was fantastic and he is 8.5m if you think his goals will be able to save the club.

Striker: Lionel Messi

For the second week running Lionel Messi makes the team as the Argentine genius scored both of Barcelona’s goals in their derby match against Espanyol. He has a massive 151pts and got another 8pts at the weekend and would set you back 20m.

Atletico Madrid go back to basics to get results

Diego Costa

Atletico Madrid look to have recovered from their slow start to the season, with Diego Simeone’s side unbeaten in their last five games in La Liga and Champions League action.

Los Rojiblancos won just one of their opening four La Liga games, with underwhelming performances and just three goals scored.

Their start was particularly frustrating for fans after their impressive showing in the European Super Cup Final, where they beat bitter rivals Real Madrid in Tallinn.

Spain may have turned a corner under Enrique

spainscoreSpain began their UEFA Nations League campaign with an impressive 2-1 win against Gareth Southgate’s England at Wembley, indicating they may have just turned a corner since their turbulent World Cup campaign. The appointment of Luis Enrique as Julen Lopetegui’s permanent replacement was seen by many as a positive move towards getting the Spaniards back to their best after a disappointing campaign in Russia this summer. Lopetegui was sacked just days before Spain’s first game in the tournament and while stand-in Fernando Hierro deserves credit for leading the nation to the tournament in such difficult circumstances he did not seem to be the right man for the job, hence Enrique’s appointment.

Atletico Madrid aiming for glorious season finale

Club Atletico de Madrid v RC Deportivo La Coruna - La Liga

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid face a decisive week in their season, as they chase European glory and domestic ‘almost glory’.

Atletico take on Marseille in Wednesday night’s Europa League final, before a final day clash with Eibar in La Liga.

Simeone’s side will be fully focused ahead of their European clash with the French side, but he will have to balance his squad across the two games.

Los Colchoneros are firm favourites to win against Marseille, and collect the trophy they won twice between 2010 and 2012.

La Roja benefit from excellent Atletico Madrid

diegocosta

Spain’s preparations for the world Cup this summer begin with double header of friendlies, against Germany and Argentina this week.

Head coach Julen Lopetegui is still mulling over his selection for his finals 23-man squad, however the excellent performances of Atletico Madrid in La Liga this season have made his job easier.

Atletico are the only side to have been in with a chance of keeping pace with runaway leaders Barcelona this season, currently sitting in second, and placed for their best La Liga finish since 2013-14.

Three Atletico players have been called up this time; Koke, Saul Niguez and Diego Costa.
