Serie A Midfielder Club Review – Cagliari

Cagliari finished the Serie A in the 11th spot which was quite an achievement considering they had just won promotion to the top tier of Italian football.

Cagliari had suffered relegation following the 2014-15 Serie A season, but they managed to bounce straight back into the Italian top tier after winning the Serie B title.

The team from Sardinia was plagued with a leaky defence all throughout the season and conceded 76 goals. However, going forward, they managed to score 55 goals.

In midfield, Joao Pedro and Mauricio Isla were the standout performers for Cagliari. Let’s take a look at how Cagliari midfielders performed over the course of the season.

Pedro missed a sizeable part of the season with a fibula fracture, but he did manage a total of 22 appearances, including five appearances from the bench. He scored seven goals and provided five assists for a total of 34 points. The 25-year-old, who was available for 6m in the market, also picked up a red card in the January defeat to AS Roma. He ended the season with a P/P score of 5.5

Isla was a regular fixture in Cagliari’s side and picked up 34 appearances. He scored one goal and provided seven assists for a point total of 15. The Chilean midfielder, who was available for 6.5m in the market, also picked up nine yellow cards during the season. At the end of the season, his P/P score reads 2.2.

Moldovan midfielder Artur Ionita picked up 15 points from a total of 18 appearances. The 4.5m player scored three goals and provided an assist.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis, on loan from Torino, made 26 appearances and picked up 13 points. The Greece international, who was
available for 4.5m, provided five assists.

Davide Di Gennaro, valued at 5m, managed 12 points from 20 appearances. He scored two goals and provided five assists for Cagliari. He also picked up a solitary red card.

Bartosz Salamon made a total of 15 appearances which included only nine starts. The Polish player, available at 4.5m, finished the six points.

Simone Padoin made 31 appearances for Cagliari and picked up five points. He could manage only one goal and an assist during the season. The Italian midfielder was available for 6.5m in the EuroFantasyLeague market.

Daniele Dessena scored two goals in 18 appearances. The 30-year-old, who was available for 4m on the market, managed to put only four points on the board. He also picked up a red card in the 5-1 defeat to Torino in November.

Nicolo Barella was the only Cagliari midfielder to finish the season with a negative sum of points. Barella, who made 28 appearances, managed only -3 points. The 3.5m midfielder provided one assist and failed to find the net during the season. He was shown his marching orders in the 2-0 defeat to Juventus in February.
