La Liga Defender Club Review – Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo
Following the gradual rise up the league table in the last four years, Celta Vigo dropped back into the bottom half of the table this season.

The Sky Blues had finished sixth during 2015-16 to register their best finish since 2006, but they could only manage a disappointing 13th place finish last season.

A major reason behind Celta’s slump in the league was their impressive run in Europa League. They made it all the way to the semi-finals of the tournament before bowing out to eventual champions Manchester United.

Celta conceded 69 goals and ended the season with a negative goal difference of -16. None of the Celta defenders managed to touch double figures in terms of points. Let’s take a look.

Argentinean centre-back Facundo Roncaglia was the busiest of all Celta defenders and finished the season with 32 appearances. However, he could only manage a total of -6 points. The 30-year-old, who was available for 3m, only managed five clean sheets and also picked up a red card during the season. Besides his defensive duties, he also contributed with a couple of goals.

Danish full-back Daniel Wass was quite effective going forward for Celta. In his 32 appearances, he scored three goals and provided four assists. He also managed five clean sheets for his side. Available at 3.5m, he finished the season with six points.

Gustavo Cabral started 25 games and finished the season with -9 points. The Argentinean centre-back, who was available at 3m, managed just four clean sheets. He also contributed with two goals and one assist.

Jonathan Castro Otto managed 30 appearances, including 23 starts, and could only manage -5 points. The Spaniard full-back, who was available at 2.5m, managed three assists, besides six clean sheets.

Spaniard right-back Hugo Mallo was available for 3m in the market, and he finished the season with -1 points. Going forward, he contributed with two goals and an assist in his 23 appearances. He was also a part of five clean-sheets for Celta and also picked up a red card.

Sergi Gomez was the most expensive Celta defender at 5.5m; however, he picked up two red cards during the season and could manage only 25 appearances. The former Barcelona youth was a part of five clean sheets and collected -7 points.

Andreu Fontas, also a former Barcelona youth, made 17 starts during the season. The 27-year-old, who had a price tag of 4.5m, was a part of three clean sheets and picked up a single red card. He also contributed with a goal and an assist.
