Premier League Goalkeeper Club Review – Crystal Palace

It was a rollercoaster season for Crystal Palace last season in the Premier League. Results under Alan Pardew were dismal and when he was replaced by Sam Allardyce just before Christmas, there wasn’t the immediate impact the Palace fans hoped for. It took a while for ‘Big Sam’ to get them into shape, but results started to follow and victories over Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal proved to be crucial to their survival. Their place in the Premier League was assured with a 4-0 drubbing of Hull City, who themselves were sent down to the Championship.

Now, with Sam Allardyce having quit Palace at the end of the season, he has been replaced by Dutch legend, Frank de Boer. He becomes their eighth manager in seven years and will be hoping to be afforded a little more time than his predecessors.

Wayne Hennessey played the majority of games for Crystal Palace making 29 appearances over the course of the season. With just seven clean sheets in those 29 starts, it’s hardly form that will convince Frank de Boer that he is worthy of his place moving forward to next season. He finished the season with zero points and with a value of 5.5M his price/performance ratio was a miserable -0.4. He did play in the aforementioned games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, however, he was between the sticks when Palace were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City, 4-0 by a dismal Sunderland side and conceded 5 in a 5-4 loss to Swansea.

Former Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda signed on last summer but has really failed to impress. He managed nine games last season and never managed a single clean sheet. In his nine matches, he conceded seventeen goals and it is unlikely he will make the grade at Palace. He is valued at 8.5M and with a points total of -16 and a price/performance ratio of -2.1, there are far better goalkeeping options for your fantasy football team.

With such a crucial position, it’s important to have a solid keeper as it can breed confidence throughout the team. Frank de Boer will be well aware of this and has already been linked with a move for Barcelona keeper Jasper Cillessen. If this transfer doesn’t go through, Palace fans can be assured that de Boer will be working hard to improve a position where they really struggled last season.
