Serie A Striker Club Review – Empoli

Levan Mchedlidze
Empoli forward line didn’t really cover themselves in glory as the club suffered relegation last season. The club from Florence struggled to score goals throughout the season and managed to find the net only on 29 occasions.

The Florence side might have finished in the 18th place, but their attack was the worst in the league. None of the Empoli players managed to touch double figures in terms of goals, and Georgian forward Levan Mchedlidze was their leading goalscorer last season with just six goals.

Overall, six forwards represented Empoli in EuroFantasyLeagye during last season, and they could only manage a total of 15 goals among themselves. Let’s have a look.

Veteran Italian striker Massimo Maccarone, who was available for 4.5m in the market, was joint-top performing Empoli forward with 19 points. The 37-year-old, who has joined Australian side Brisbane Roar this summer, managed a total of 28 appearances with just 17 starts. He scored five goals and provided a couple of assists for his former side last season. He also picked up a solitary red card for the Florence club.

Georgian striker Levan Mchedlidze struggled with multiple injuries last season and could only manage 15 league appearances. His absence was arguably one of the main reasons behind Empoli’s relegation this summer. Despite missing more than half of the season, the 27-year-old was Empoli’s top-scorer with six goals. He was available for 5m in the market and put together 19 points.

Manuel Pucciarelli, who has already departed to Chievo, scored three goals and provided an assist in 32 appearances. The 26-year-old, who was Empoli’s most expensive forward at 5.5m, finished the season with just ten points.

Guido Marilungo was on loan at Empoli from Atalanta. The 27-year-old made only 20 appearances for Empoli including just 11 starts. He failed to find the net for the Florence side, but he did provide four assists. He was available for 4m on the market, and his point tally at the end of the season stood at six.

Mame Thiam joined Empoli on a loan move from Juventus in January. The 24-year-old managed a total of 15 appearances and scored a solitary goal and provided an assist. He scored in the shocking 2-1 win over Milan in April, but it was not enough to save Empoli from relegation. He was available for 1.5m and managed just five points.

Former Serie A Player of the Year Alberto Gilardino left Empoli to join another-relegated side Pescara in January. Before his move, the 35-year-old made 14 appearances for Empoli without scoring a goal or providing an assist.
