La Liga Weekend Picks – Round 8

garcia4With a full fixture list coming up in La Liga this weekend, there is plenty of action to sift through – making the weekend picks this time won’t be the easiest job! There are some cracking fixtures to come, as always – Real Madrid travelling to the impressive Alaves will be worth watching on Saturday, while Sunday’s pick of the matches sees fourth placed Atletico Madrid taking on fifth placed Real Betis. Both sides are tied on points and have decent defences, though the hosts are ahead on merit of having scored three more goals (and conceding one less). With that in mind, let’s go for a 4-3-3 here and see which players are worth considering for you to bring in to your fantasy team this coming weekend.

GK – Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid)
Atleti’s game against Betis may have been mentioned in the intro as a tight ont, but visitors Bets have scored the joint-fewest goals in the league so far this season, having netted just five. Oblak will fancy his chances of a clean sheet, especially given the home advantage.

DF – Juanpe (Girona)
Girona’s defenders have not had a massively successful time of things this season – Juanpe leads the pack with four fantasy points – but their home game against Eibar (who don’t score many) offers him a chance to kick on and start racking up some points.

DF – Jordi Alba (Barcelona)
Barcelona’s biggest point-scoring defender, Alba could well find himself with some additional points this weekend. Hosts Valencia won for the first time last time, but with only five goals so far this season Alba and co. should be capable of keeping them out.

DF – Nacho (Real Valladolid)
Nacho is doing well so far this season with 19 points, and Real Valladolid host second-bottom Huesca in Sunday morning’s fixture. Huesca can score, but their bright start has now stuttered into a struggle, so Nacho is capable of adding to that tally here.

DF - Dídac Vilá (Espanyol)
Espanyol’s home game against Villarreal represents a chance for all of their defenders to add more points to their season totals. Villarreal have struggled in front of goal, and Vilá is behind Hermoso on the club’s defensive tally. Real chance for him here.

MF – Pablo Fornals (Villarreal)
On the other hand, Fornals has been one of Villarreal’s better players this season and if he can take the game to Espanyol’s midfield and defence, he could just break through and add to his season tally of 14 so far.

MF - Jesús Navas (Sevilla)
This spot could have gone to any Sevilla midfielder, with Navas being their third-best in the middle this season behind Silva and Sarabia. Sevilla are at home against Celta Vigo and while the visitors have done well so far, third-placed Sevilla will be confident.

MF – Raul Garcia (Athletic Bilbao)
Athletic Bilbao kick off the weekend’s action at home against Real Sociedad on Friday evening. While Athletic are the lower placed of the two sides it should be close, and players like Garcia could prove the difference.

ST - Ángel (Getafe)
Ángel has a chance to get himself on the scoresheet as Getafe host Levante on Saturday afternoon. The guests have one of the poorest defensive records in the league so far and the striker has done fairly well so far this season, with 12 points to date.

ST – Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
Los Blancos travel to Alaves in one of the games of the weekend, and Benzema  has proven himself hungry with four goals in seven games so far this season. Alaves average over a goal conceded per game, so Benzema will be looking to capitalise.

ST - Willian José (Real Sociedad)
José will want to bounce back from his penalty miss last weekend as Sociedad head to Athletic Bilbao on Friday. Bilbao’s defence can be leaky at times, so there is surely a chance.
