What is Brazilian legend Ronaldo’s ultimate goal with Real Valladolid?

In 2018 when Ronaldo, the 1990s Brazilian version became the majority owner of Spanish club Real Valladolid it certainly raised eyebrows. Why would Ronaldo become president of a club who were used to either being relegated or fighting in a relegation dog fight? The answer is the challenge and of course the affordability of the club, Ronaldo now owns 82% of the team, but is his project go after 2 years?

In Ronaldo’s first season of ownership Valladolid came 16th and just 4 points was the difference between staying in La Liga and playing their next season in the Segunda. Everyone at the club was obviously relived. They also made it to the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey which was no mean feat but all in all it was a season with a few highs and one to forget.

The next season saw an improvement in the league when they finished 13th but they had only ironically finished with 1 more point than the previous season and had only won a lowly 23% of their games.

This season marks the clubs 90th in existence. The objective of course is to improve and keep moving forwards. The club lost Mohammed Salisu to Premier League side Southampton but got a small fortune for him 12m euros. Transfers in and have been mostly free ones, though Fabian Orellana from Eibar catches the eye.

The project this season is to try and reach 50 points and finish in the top 10 and then for the season after qualification for the Europa League- this would be the best case scenario. But when Valladolid aren’t playing well one could just imagine that Ronaldo would love to rip off that suit, go back in time 20 years and get on that pitch pronto. The club lose a lot of games and that includes home ones, and this will be a frustrating role for Ronaldo before it gets better, and the fact is football can be cruel, it may never get better, especially if the club are relegated.

Valladolid played four pre-season games losing 2 of them but gained a decent 2-2 draw away to Portuguese side Braga in their last game before the La Liga season kicked off on September 12th.

In the league the club have played two games, starting with a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad at home and then a defeat away to Real Betis losing 2-0. Michel, the attacking midfielder has scored the clubs only goal so far.

It will be a long and testing season for the club with such limited funds, their next game is on September 27th when they will play Celta Vigo at home. Home games will be so important for the club, and they must pick up points here, that is going to be key for survival for the 3rd time in a row under Ronaldo.

Top La Liga Strikers in 2018/19: Iago Aspas

aspas

Apart from a brief switch to Liverpool and some loans Iago Aspas‘ name has always been linked to Celta Vigo and he has just finished the La Liga season on a personal high and had a very good season.

Aspas earned 89 points and was overall ranked as the 5th best striker in La Liga, that is no mean feat for a player from Celta Vigo. Aspas scored an incredible 20 goals from just 27 games, 26 of those games he started in and he also assisted in a further 6 goals.

Celta Vigo were able to keep six clean sheets when he played and he was booked five times over the season. What is remarkable is that Aspas was such a vital player for the club as he was involved in 26 of their goals from a grand total of 53 goals.

In the end Celta Vigo survived and only just from relegation as they finished in 17th place, and there is no doubt that the club remain in La Liga because of Aspas’ goals.

Aspas’ striker ranking for Spain’s La Liga finished at 14th and overall with all the major leagues combined he is ranked at 39th.

Aspas did not start the season off well, in his first game he didn’t score as Celta Vigo could only draw with Espanyol 1-1 and he also picked up a yellow card. In the next game Celta won but again he didn’t score and it meant that Aspas started his first 2 games with a total of -1 point.

But his form soon picked up and he scored points in his next 4 games, including scoring a brace against Real Valladolid in a match that was thrilling and ended 3-3 and he picked up 8 points. His biggest points haul of the season came in the game at home to Eibar which Celta Vigo won 4-0, Aspas scored a hat-trick and also earned bonus points as a consequence and earned a massive 14 points that weekend.

The best period though for Aspas was as the season was concluding and it looked like Celta Vigo could be relegated, both himself and the team fought bravely and in the last 9 league games he earned points in eight of them which ended up totalling 47 points and so more than half of his points were earned in this time period as he went soaring up the rankings.

Aspas only went 8 games in the season where he didn’t score a point and also his worst points total for a match was -1 point, this means that he stayed quite consistent throughout the season.

It’s interesting to note that Aspas earned exactly the same points (89) as he did the season before and at 31 he looks to be finding his best form for Celta Vigo.

Villarreal, Valencia and Getafe have all been disappointing in front of goal this term, netting just six goals each so far. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, are the only side in the top six yet to reach double figures with their nine successful strikes so far, while Barcelona have scored the most on 10 – just a shade ahead of league leaders Sevilla on 18. Real Betis have scored the least in the league, though, with just five strikes. With that in mind, let’s take a 4-4-2 and get cracking.

Ronaldo’s takeover of Real Valladolid should help the club progress

ronaldoWhen Real Valladolid secured their return to La Liga at the end of the 2017/18 season after four seasons away from the Spanish top flight, few could have envisioned what the immediate future would hold at José Zorrilla. Back in May rumours began swirling that legendary former Brazilian striker Ronaldo could be considering buying a controlling stake in the club, and those were proven correct when he spent around €30m to purchase 51% last month. The 42-year-old is of course no stranger to La Liga, having spent time at both Barcelona and Real Madrid during his glittering playing career – and so having such a big name owning the club can surely only be of benefit?

Conservative Valladolid make La Liga inroads

Valladolid

The low scoring form of Valladolid had taken on almost comedy status in the opening weeks of the La Liga season, with no goals in their opening four league games.

However the defensive strategy of manager Sergio Gonzalez may now be paying dividends as his side have started to settle.

As despite limiting his own side he has also worked hard to frustrate the opposition, collecting two 0-0 draws in that run.

Alongside that they restricted Barcelona to a 1-0 win, and only lost by the same score line to Alaves, due to a last minute goal for the Basque side.
