Neymar cites racism for red card in defeat

Paris Saint-Germain were handed their second defeat to start the 2020-21 French Ligue 1 season as they went down 0-1 against rivals Olympique Marseille in La Classique at the Parc des Princes on Sunday night.

Florian Thauvin scored the game’s only goal on half hour by volleying Dimitri Payet’s delivery from a free kick, but all the talking points came deep in stoppage time as five players were shown their marching orders.

The match had been at boiling point before Marseille’s Dario Benedetto shoved Leandro Paredes off the ball. The Argentinian retaliated and a brawl ensued.

Layvin Kurzawa and Jordan Amavi exchanged kicks and both were shown red cards. Benedetto and Paredes were next to be dismissed for their involvement before referee Jerome Brisard consulted the VAR screen.

Replays showed Neymar slapping the back of the head of Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez and was duly asked to leave the field of play in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Top Ligue 1 Midfielders in 2018/19: Florian Thauvin

thauvin-750x410(1)

It cannot be underestimated how important Florian Thauvin is to Marseille and it would be a strange day in Marseille’s history to not see the player in their line up, he has become part of the furniture at Stade Velodrome.

But after a successful personal season for Thauvin the rumour mill will start up once again and he could be linked with a move away from the club from the south of France. This is due in part to the fact that Marseille did not qualify for Europe, after an inconsistent season saw the club finish in 5th place a cool 30 points behind champions PSG and 5 points from a European finish.

Thauvin has spent five seasons with Marseille on and off and once left the club to join Newcastle United, but in England he only played 13 games before being loaned back to Marseille who eventually signed him permanently. Time is still on his side and at 26 he has his best years ahead of him. But despite winning the World Cup with France (he hardly played in the competition) he only has one other trophy which is the Ligue 2 championship with Bastia, and Marseille’s resolve may be tested again this summer to try and hang on to the player.

It should be no surprise if bigger clubs are looking at Thauvin after the season he has had. In the end Thauvin finished just 1 point behind Angel Di Maria to be crowned the best midfielder in France in the European fantasy rankings for Ligue 1. Thauvin finished on 95 points after scoring 16 goals and assisting in another 8. Both Thauvin and Di Maria were clearly the best midfielders this past season in Ligue 1 and both finished over 20 points above the next player in 3rd.

Thauvin’s best weekend occurred against Amiens when Marseille won 3-1. Thauvin scored a hat-trick which also earned him a bonus 2 points and from that one game he earned a whopping 14 points. There were other stand out moments too like when he earned 10 points against Guingamp and Toulouse, he also started the season with 10 points from his first two games.

One negative that could be pointed at the player was his disciplinary. Thauvin was booked 5 times during the season and was also sent off once. Take a few of those cards away and he would have finished top of the pile for Ligue 1 midfielders.

For now Ligue 1 is still graced by his presence but after having another superb season one wonders how long Thauvin will stay with Marseille and no European football for next season?

Ligue 1: Week 38: Player Picks for the Weekend

lab(1)

Almost everything has been settled in Ligue 1, we know the champions, the teams who will participate in the Champions League and Europa League. The only real football up for debate is who will be the final team to be relegated and/or have to play in a play-off with a Ligue 2 side, which is what the team finishing in 18th place will have to do.

That battle is between Caen and Amiens, and Amiens has a 2 point advantage over Caen. Monaco could still finish in the bottom three but that looks very distant and they should be safe, however they will have a tough final game as it is the derby v Nice.

Below we pick out 11 players in a formation of 4-4-2 who could pick up points at the weekend in the final games of the Ligue 1 season.

Goalkeeper: Brice Samba-Caen

Brice Samba has kept 3 clean sheets in the past five games for Caen who need to beat Bordeaux to have a chance to stay up. Bordeaux have been very poor and Caen are at home. Samba is only 3m to buy which is fantastic value.

Defender: Alexander Djiku- Caen

Staying with Caen Djiku has played the most games for the club in defence and even though he has a poor points tally, and the club let in 4 goals v Lyon in their last game. It is this one that counts. Caen will be favourites to beat Bordeaux and Djiku could keep another clean sheet. He is valued at 7m.

Defender: Diego Carlos- Nantes

Diego Carlos has been Nantes best defender stats wise and has 23 points. He is valued at 6m. Nantes will play their last game of the season at home and they will host Strasbourg, for us this is a home win and Nantes also have a good chance to keep a clean sheet.

Defender: Mathieu Debuchy- Saint Etienne

Saint Etienne celebrated Europa League qualification as they sealed fourth place last weekend. They will play Angers away and this could be a low scoring game or at least a win for the away side. Debuchy could pick up points for a clean sheet, but he also likes to come forward for the Verts and scores too. He can be bought for 7.5m.

Defender: Wesley Lautoa- Dijon

Dijon are still not down and if they win at the weekend and Caen do not get the right result they could finish 18th and have the play off. Dijon have conceded goals lately but they will play Toulouse at the weekend a side who are in general poor. Plus Lautoa costs just 3m and this could be a steal.

Midfielder: Remi Oudin- Reims

Reims will play PSG and they will be the underdogs to win. But at the same time Reims have been able to surprise them in recent years and will want to give a good performance with their final home game of the season. Oudin has scored 10 goals which makes him a dangerous player and he is valued at 10m.

Midfielder: Florian Thauvin- Marseille

Florian Thauvin is one of the best players in the league and he loves to get forward and score goals. He won the player of the weekend this past weekend. But he has just 4 goals in 2019, he will be determined to add more like he was in the last game when he scored a brace. Thauvin has 89 points and would cost 11m.

Midfielder: Valentin Rongier- Nantes

Rongier has had a great second half to the season much like his club Nantes. They play at home against Strasbourg and will be the favourites to win the match. Rongier has scored 4 goals and assisted in 5 so there is points in him and he is valued at 4.5m.

Midfielder: Jordan Ferri- Nimes

Picking Jordan Ferri is all about value and he is just 3m to bring into your team. Yes Nimes will play Lyon at the weekend but they will be at home and Lyon will feel more relaxed given that they have secured 3rd place. Nimes have played some good football and have goals in them.

Striker: M’baye Niang- Rennes

Rennes will be at home in their final game and will play on form Lille. But this pick is based on scoring goals and Niang will be a constant threat. He has scored 9 goals and assisted in another four and he could be a shrewd pick at just 4.5m.

Striker: Gaetan Laborde- Montpellier

Gaetan Laborde has had a decent season and while Montpellier will be away to Marseille this is a game where anything can happen and we expect to see lots of chances and goals for both sides. Laborde has every chance to get on the end of something and he is valued at 5m, he has scored 11 goals this season.

Ligue 1 Player of the Weekend: Florian Thauvin

marseille_thauvin-1-1-750x410(1)

It was the penultimate league game of the season in Ligue 1 this past weekend and the player of the weekend goes to Marseille midfielder Florian Thauvin.

Marseille were playing Toulouse away from home and losing the game 1-0 when Thauvin set up Morgan Sanson to equalise just three minutes later. But the influential player would save the best until last.

Marseille were winning a thrilling and very open game 3-2 in the final stages when Toulouse had a chance to try and equalise and that is when Thauvin showed his best qualities. He made it 4-2 in the 90th minute which effectively at that point killed the game after Clinton N’Jie had assisted him crossing from the left and on first look it seemed that Toulouse had scored an own goal but Thauvin got the credit. Around 60 seconds later Thauvin put the icing on the cake, again a pass from N’Jie and this time the World Cup winner sent a fantastic shot from his right boot sailing into the Toulouse net. Now it was 5-2.

Marseille celebrated well and embraced Thauvin even if the club have come up short this season and won’t be playing European football. This kind of result is what the club needed after a start stop last few weeks and on top of that Mario Balotelli who has started so well for the club since his move in January was injured for this game.

It has been a great week for Thauvin who has also been called up to the France national squad for their next three games.

As for his overall stats. well Thauvin added another 2 goals at the weekend which means he has 15 this season. It hasn’t been a great 2019 for Thauvin in terms of scoring goals. He has netted only 4 times this year, and 2 of those came in this game. But he showed hunger the whole game in trying to score and it just shows a football game is never really over until the final whistle.

In the Ligue 1 fantasy rankings Thauvin is 4th overall as the best player in the league and for his position he is 2nd behind PSG’s Angel Di Maria, just 7 points separates the players. Thauvin has 89 points and with a good game at home against Montpellier who could well surpass Di Maria in the table rankings. Scoring 15 goals this season and also assisting in a further 8 just underlines that the player has had a successful personal season once again.

However with no European football to play for next season one wonders if Thauvin will want a move away from the club, all will be revealed in the summer.

Thauvin is available to purchase here if you want him in your team for the final round of Ligue 1 games this weekend.

Top 4 all win in Ligue 1 as relegation battle boils down to Caen and Amiens

sanson-113(1)

That was more like it from PSG who have been a shadow of themselves since winning the league in April. They beat Dijon 4-0 which included a brace from Kylian Mbappe who ends the season as top goal scorer. Perhaps the real story was that PSG were 2-0 up within the first ten minutes and Edinson Cavani scored. It looks increasingly likely that Cavani will leave the club in the summer and if so, then this is his last match in Paris. He crowned it well.

Neymar was missing as he has been suspended for the last 2 games of the season and of course there is speculation that he will not be at PSG next season. Lille finally confirmed 2nd place and the runners-up spot with a fantastic 5-0 win over Angers and yet again Nicolas Pepe starred for the team and scored a couple of goals. Like others Pepe’s name is now being talked about, could he make a Premier League move next season?

Lyon confirmed 3rd place and the final Champions League spot, although they will have to qualify for the competition proper. They beat Caen 4-0 which was significant given that Caen are fighting relegation. It is now between Caen and Amiens to see who stays up as Monaco look safe. Amiens have a 2 point advantage over Caen.

Saint Etienne won with a great 3-0 victory over Nice to confirm their Europa League participation next season. They have pulled 5 points clear of fifth place, and the European spot was well deserved after such brilliant form especially in the second half of the season.

Montpellier’s draw with Nantes ended their slim hopes of European football next season and the result also let in Marseille who have closed the gap over them to just 1 point. That is because Marseille beat Toulouse in a thrilling match that ended 5-2 to the L’OM. The score was 3-2 in the 90th minute but Florian Thauvin scored 2 goals in a matter of 60 seconds to give the final score more of a gloss.

Nimes drew 2-2 against bottom team Guingamp, but this wasn’t seen as a disappointing result given that both teams were not playing for anything and the season has clearly wound down and both sets of players enjoyed the game, which was entertaining for the fans. Nimes will have to win next weekend or could lose their 7th place to Nice, and as mentioned before Nice’s good form went out the window with a 0-3 loss at Saint Etienne.

If Reims win their last game and Nice and Nimes lose the club could leapfrog both of them. The final round of games will take place this weekend.

Ligue 1: Week 34: 11 Player Picks for the Weekend

NEZ(1)

PSG were crowned champions for the second year in a row last weekend and it means that the club have won the league every year since 2013 except for Monaco’s triumph in 2017. PSG will play Rennes in the Coupe de France final at the weekend but a few days later will make up for their weekend game when they take on Montpellier.

Champions League and Europa League places are still to be decided and we look at the forthcoming fixtures to try and identify which players we think will be able to earn your Ligue 1 Fantasy team valuable points over the weekend. Formation: 4-4-2.

Goalkeeper: Mike Maignan- Lille

Mike Maignan has done well this season but Lille will be at home to Nimes and will be the favourites to win the game and not only that Lille will be looking to keep a clean sheet. They did so in their last game v Toulouse. Maignan is just 5m to add to your team.

Defender: Malang Sarr- Nice

Malang Sarr has been a rock in defence for Nice even if they are not going through the best form he is part of a team that have conceded just 2 goals in their last 5 games. Sarr is 5.5m and is rated as Nice’s best defender in Ligue 1 Fantasy rankings.

Defender: Dante Costa- Nice

Dante Costa has been brilliant in recent weeks for Nice and alongside Sarr has been part of a team that have conceded the least amount of goals in Ligue 1 this month. Nice are at home against Guingamp and can keep yet another clean sheet. Costa is valued at 6.5m.

Defender: Hiroki Sakai- Marseille

Sakai has proven to be Marseille’s best defender, he doesn’t score many goals, just 1 this season but his job is to keep clean sheets. Marseille are going for a Champions League place and they will be at home to a leaky Nantes defence. Sakai can be in your team for 7.5m.

Defender: Alexander Djiku- Caen

You would think picking a defender who plays for a team who are in 19th makes no sense. But Caen are not giving up just yet and have kept 2 clean sheets from their last five games including their last match which was a fantastic win over Lyon. Djiku should be looked in if you don’t already have him and he is available at 7m.

Midfielder: Enzo Crivelli- Caen

We are sticking with another Caen player. The reason is that Enzo Crivelli is classed as a midfielder/striker but usually isn’t short of goals. He has scored 5 and assisted in 6 this season and Caen are playing a similar quality of side Dijon and they are at home so will try and go for this game. Crivelli is valued at 5.5m.

Midfielder: Wahbi Khazri- Saint Etienne

Khazri has his fair share of goals this season, 13 to be precise and the club will be playing Toulouse at home. Saint Etienne are in very good form and Khazri has put in some great displays in the past few weeks and is worth adding to your team for this weekend for 7.5m.

Midfielder: Florian Thauvin- Marseille

Everyone knows of Thauvin’s obvious qualities but this is the business end for Marseille now who are still hoping to get a Champions League place or at the very least a top 5 end to the season. The club will be playing Nantes at home and Thauvin is valued at 11m.

Midfielder: Adrien Silva- Monaco

Monaco will play Rennes who have been in even poorer form than them, and yes the game is away from home but Silva at times this season has been a rock in midfield for the club and has the ability to try and support the defence and even score some goals himself. He can be brought into your team for 5m.

Striker: Allan Saint-Maximin -Nice

Allan Saint-Maximin has not scored as many goals as he would like this season with 6, but at the same time Nice are on their last games now and are at home v Guingamp. He has assisted a few times too where he can earn some valuable points. Nice will be expected to win and get some goals. He is 5m.

Striker: Neymar- PSG

Yes Neymar is valued at 14.5m and that will be too high for many people, but picking him this week could be worth your investment. He came back from a long time off injured and looked rusty but should be back to his best when PSG take on Montpellier. He knows how to get goals and will be hungry to have a strong finish to the season.

Ligue 1: Week 33: 11 Player Picks for the Weekend

PEPEPEP(1)

Another game for PSG and another chance to win the league, but they lost their game in hand over Nantes in midweek. It means that they have missed out on winning the league for the 3rd straight game. Still such is their lead that they will still win the league- they need just 1 more point from 6 games, but they have made heavy weather of it all.

Alongside PSG’s game with Monaco to possibly decide the league outcome we will take a look at the fixtures this weekend in Ligue 1 and try and pick out the players that could earn you points for your Fantasy Ligue 1 team. Formation 4-4-2.

Goalkeeper: Stephane Ruffier- Saint Etienne

Ruffier is valued at 7.5m and has been part of a Saint Etienne team that has conceded just 4 goals in the past month. He has also kept 3 clean sheets from the last five games as they travel to Reims this weekend he could be worth picking up.

Defender: Dante Costa- Nice

Costa has put in some great displays over the past few weeks for Nice and let’s not forget here is a team who have kept 3 clean sheets in a row. Also they will play the bottom club in Caen and will be at home, so will be favourites to pick up the points and keep another clean sheet.

Defender: Malang Sarr- Nice

Let’s stick with another Nice defender who have done so well at the back and that is none other than Malang Sarr who has also played the majority of the season. They are facing the poorest side in the league and will be at home. Sarr is great value too at just 5.5m.

Defender: Kenny Tete- Lyon

Lyon have been in poor form but at the same time surely this will not last as they try and consolidate 3rd place. They will be at home this weekend against Angers in 12th place. Tete has only played 10 games this season but has been the choice of late and is valued at 6.5m.

Defender: Diego Carlos- Nantes

It’s true that Nantes have not kept a clean sheet in over a month but that will end at some point and the club will be at home against Amiens who have only scored 8 goals away from home. There is a good chance they will get a clean sheet and Diego Carlos can score goals too, he did so in Nantes last game against PSG. He is valued at 6m.

Midfielder: Julian Draxler -PSG

Draxler has had a mixed season with PSG but he is set to play when the club take on Monaco due to injuries. He can score goals too and has netted 7 times this season and set up another 3 goals. Draxler can be bought for a bargain 6m.

Midfielder: Mathieu Debuchy- Saint Etienne

The Ligue 1 Fantasy player of the week is in good form and very confident and it’s possible that against Reims he can shine again at the weekend after scoring 2 goals. His distribution is excellent too and he can be brought into your team for 7.5m.

Midfielder: Jonathan Bamba- Lille

Jonathan Bamba has been consistent of late for Lille and he scored against PSG in Lille’s last game which they won 5-1. Lille will be away at the weekend but this is against Toulouse where they will be expected to win and he could well get on the score sheet. Bamba is valued at 7m.

Midfielder: Florian Thauvin- Marseille

Marseille will play Guingamp in 19th place and will be the odds on favourites to win this game. Thauvin has the quality to score from midfield against such opposition and if he isn’t already in your team could well be worth picking, Marseille could get a few goals in that game.

Striker: Kylian Mbappe- PSG

Mbappe was dropped from PSG’s last game v Nantes because he criticised the commitment of the team. But coach Thomas Tuchel has many injury worries and needs Ligue 1′s leading scorer. This is a game in Paris against Monaco where if they win or draw they win the league. Mbappe could score and get the winner and vital points to crown a fantastic domestic season.

Striker: Nicolas Pepe- Lille

Pepe has been one of the finest young strikers not just in Ligue 1 but in Europe this season. Lille will play Toulouse and Pepe has just scored against PSG and found his scoring boots once more. Pepe can add to his tally again at the weekend and is valued at 8m.

Ligue 1: Week 32: 11 Player Picks for the Weekend

memphis-depay-lyon_ylg8x9ppdmr11sbix78nsvjci(1)

With just 21 points left on the board most options are still open- who will finish in a Champions League place? Who can get the remaining Europa League positions and who will be relegated from Ligue 1? PSG could wrap up the title this weekend too, and below we look at the players that you should consider that have the best chance of earning points this weekend based on the fixtures. Formation 4-4-2.

Goalkeeper: Walter Benitez- Nice

Walter Benitez has been one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1 and with Nice he has not conceded a goal for over 180 minutes and just 2 in the last five games. Nice have found form and they will play away against Rennes which will not be easy but if you do not have Benitez in your team you should and the shot stopper is valued at 6.5m.

Defender: Emil Krafth- Amiens

Even though Amiens are in 17th position and have struggled for most of the season Emil Krafth has stuck out as being a good defender recently and Amiens have kept 2 clean sheets from their last 3. They play Dijon at the weekend and have every chance of keeping another one. Krafth can be brought in for 3m.

Defender: Stefan Mitrovic- Strasbourg

Strasbourg have been brilliant in recent weeks and Stefan Mitrovic could have the opportunity in defence to earn some points as the team return home to face bottom club Guingamp. The last time they were at home they beat a much better team in Reims 4-0, keeping a clean sheet. Mitrovic can be snapped up for just 3m.

Defender: Kenny Lala- Strasbourg

Keeping with another Strasbourg player is Kenny Lala, and maximum points could be earned as if expected Strasbourg beat Guingamp and keep a clean sheet. The bonus is that Lala can score goals too, and he has done so 4 times this season. Lala would cost 6m.

Defender: Daniel Congre-Montpellier

Montpellier will be at home against Toulouse and this game could give the team the right opportunity to get back on track. Montpellier have kept 2 clean sheets at home in recent weeks including their last match against Guingamp. Congre who has been a constant presence this season in the back four is valued at 6m.

Midfielder: Florent Mollet- Montpellier

Mollet has played 25 times this season and if Montpellier can put in a decent display against Toulouse which they will be expected to do Mollet could rake in the points. Added to the fact is Mollet likes to get up front and try and score goals and he has 3 so far. He can be bought for 7m.

Midfielder: Marco Verratti- PSG

Verratti is of course one of the best midfielders in his position in Europe and he can score goals too. But his role at the weekend will also be helping out the defence. PSG have a tough away game against Lille but at the same time a good display means the club will win the league. To bring Verratti in your fantasy team will cost 7m.

Midfielder: Cesc Fabregas- Monaco

Cesc Fabregas has been talking Monaco up and is training hard and adapting well. Playing at home against Reims who will have a big travel journey Monaco can start as the favourites and Fabregas may just be able to earn vital points. He is valued at 7m.

Midfielder: Florian Thauvin- Marseille

Marseille have not won a game for their last 3 matches but could get back on track when they will be at home against Nimes. Florian Thauvin can hold the midfield well against such opposition and is not afraid to earn points through scoring goals, he has an outstanding 13 so far this season and he can be snapped up for 11m.

Striker: Memphis Depay- Lyon

Lyon had  a poor result against Dijon last weekend but the club and Depay have had extra training and are focused for their game when they play Nantes who are in poor form and have lost their last 3 games. Depay has 6 goals this season which is not a great record but he usually does well against Nantes. Depay is 10.5m.

Striker: Kylian Mbappe- PSG

Mbappe was somehow benched in PSG’s last game and they didn’t win that. At the weekend they will play Lille away which won’t be easy but at the same time Mbappe will be raring to go to prove that his coach Thomas Tuchel should not drop him, even if it is to rest him. PSG can win the league at Lille who are in 2nd place and Mbappe has 27 goals this season, he is valued at 10.5m.

Ligue 1: Player of the Week: Angel Di Maria

DI MARIA(1)

There were several players that performed well this past weekend in Ligue 1 including Marquinhos for PSG, Moussa Dembele for Lyon and Ludovic Ajorque for Strasbourg. But our pick goes to Angel Di Maria for league leaders PSG who put in a terrific display ahead of what has been a difficult couple of weeks for the Paris club following their Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United.

Di Maria picked up the joint most points for the week with 8 after his performance against Dijon which saw the champions increase their lead at the top to 17 points over 2nd placed Lille.

So how did Di Maria pick up his points for the week? It was a match that PSG ended up winning 4-0 away from home against relegation threatened Dijon and it only took 7 minutes for PSG to take the lead. It was Di Maria’s perfect cross which set up Marquinhos to open the scoring for the away side.

Soon after Kylian Mbappe arguably the best centre forward in Europe right now doubled the lead for the club, so PSG had gone in at 2-0 for half time. The 3rd goal followed five minutes into the second period and it was a goal to finish the game off and secure the win for PSG and it came from Di Maria. The Argentinian had now scored a goal and set one up for an all round fantastic display.

Overall this season Di Maria has scored 7 goals and assisted 9 times which is the best assist record in Ligue 1 this season. He’s currently in 5th position in Fantasy Ligue 1 standings, with all positions considered which is a remarkable statistic and he is 40 points behind his team mate in 1st place Kylian Mbappe who has of course picked up most of his points through virtue of being the league’s top goal scorer.

As midfielders go Di Maria sits in 2nd place and is 7 points behind Marseille’s Florian Thauvin. Whilst Thauvin has scored 6 more goals than Di Maria this season he has assisted in three less goals than him.

Apart from the goals and natural skill of Di Maria, the Argentina international has really curbed his temper and it has stood out and served PSG well. For example since the beginning of the season Di Maria has been booked just once, which is another remarkable statistic. It has meant that he hasn’t had to miss a run of games through disciplinary problems and has always been available for the club unless of an injury.

In the Ligue 1 Fantasy standings his showing over the week has risen by 2.19% and he can be brought into your team for 9m. This looks like a good deal given how many points he can pick up with assists and given the fact that he rarely drops points with a near clean record of yellow cards. You can add Di Maria to your team by going to the link below. Get playing!

Lille in pole position to keep Pepe amid Barcelona interest

pepeLille forward Nicolas Pepe has had a cracking start to the season – no headlines there – with five goals from his first eight appearances. Included among those goals was a hattrick in the club’s 3-2 win at Amiens in September, and as a result the 23-year-old has found himself in some demand from around Europe. Spanish giants Barcelona are one club to have been credited with an interest in him, while Premier League outfits Arsenal and Everton have also reportedly been keeping tabs on his progress. It would seem easy, then, to assume he could be bringing an end to his time in France after arriving in 2017 with a move to pastures new, but it would appear that the former Angers forward would prefer to remain with Les Dogues – for now, at least.
