Top Five Fantasy Football Defenders – Premier League – Round 19

Marcos Alonso

While the world will be celebrating the arrival of the new year, football fans will witness the culmination of the first half of the ongoing Premier League.

Ahead of the 19th game week, Chelsea hold a six-point lead at the top and look favourites to lift the title in May. The Blues boast of the best defence in the league, and it very much noticeable in our list.

Take a look at the five best fantasy football defenders for the upcoming game week in Premier League.

1. Marcus Alonso: Chelsea

The Spaniard, who joined Chelsea from Fiorentina during summer, leads the list by quite a margin. The Blues have registered ten clean sheets in their last 12 league fixtures, and they are favourites to do so again against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Eve. Alonso, who has made 15 league appearances, has featured in 11 clean sheets for his team this season. He leads our list with 59 points, but what makes this feat remarkable is his dirt-cheap price of 2m. He has been mostly deployed as a wing-back by Conte in his 3-4-3 formation and has also contributed with one goal and two assists.

If he is still not on your team, go and get him now!

2. David Luiz: Chelsea

Many laughed when David Luiz re-joined Chelsea during summer. However, he has been a revelation under Antonio Conte this season. He has kept 12 clean sheets in 17 appearances this season. He has 51 points on the board and is available for 8.5m in the transfer market. He has a P/P ratio of 6.6, which gives him the second spot on our list.

3. Cesar Azpilicueta: Chelsea

Azpilicueta has been a crucial part of the Blues’ back-three this season. The 8.5m man has kept 11 clean sheets in 18 league appearances. His point tally of 50 means that he is almost on par with Luiz in terms of P/P ratio at 6.5. The 27-year-old has also provided one assist this season.

4. Gary Cahill: Chelsea

In terms of points, the veteran centre-back is placed second in our fantasy league. However, due to his slightly high transfer value of 10m, he features on the fourth spot in our list. The England international has picked up 54 points on the back of 11 clean sheets in 18 starts this season. He has also scored a solitary goal for the Blues in the first half of the ongoing season.

5. Laurent Koscielny: Arsenal

We have decided to ignore Tottenham players this game-week as Spurs will be playing away to Watford and we don’t see them keeping a clean sheet at Vicarage Road.

So, Laurent Koscielny of Arsenal occupies the last spot on our list as the Gunners will host 17th-placed Crystal Palace this game week. The France international has managed five clean sheets in 17 appearances and has also scored two crucial goals. He is available for 8.5m and has picked up 27 points.
