Our list of top defenders in La Liga has a new name on the top this week. In terms of names, the list bears a similar look the lists from the recent weeks.
This week, we have a couple of crucial top-of-the-table fixtures as Atletico Madrid will host Barcelona and Villarreal will welcome Real Madrid. Our list is dominated by players from these clubs; since there is no easy fixture for any side this week, we are sticking with these same players in our list.
Let’s take a look at the top five defenders for La Liga game week 24.
1. Mario Perez – Villarreal
The Villarreal defender is the new number one on our list. The right-back picked up four points as Villarreal defeated Real Sociedad 1-0 during the last game week. The 26-year-old has 48 points in his account and he costs 7.5m in the transfer market. He has picked up 11 clean sheets in 23 appearances this season.
P/P ratio: 7.1
2. Filipe Luis – Atletico Madrid
The Brazilian, who occupied the top spot last game week, also has 48 points in his account. During last game week, he drew a blank as Atletico Madrid defeated Sporting Gijon 4-1. He costs 7.5m in the transfer market and has picked up ten clean sheets in 20 appearances this season. It will be a big test for him this weekend as Atletico will host Barcelona.
P/P ratio: 6.3
3. Diego Godin – Atletico Madrid
Like the first two names on the list, the Uruguayan also has 48 points his account. However, he is quite expensive in the market at 10m. The 31-year-old hasn’t featured for Atletico since suffering an injury earlier this month. However, he is expected to return against Barcelona on Sunday. He has kept 11 clean sheets in 20 appearances and has scored one goal.
P/P ratio: 5.3
4. Marcelo – Real Madrid
The Brazilian full-back has made his way into our list on the back of some strong performances. The 28-year-old, who is available for 8.5m in the market, has picked up 40 points this season. He has made only 15 starts and has managed clean sheets in six of them. He has also contributed with one goal and five assists.
P/P ratio: 4.9
5. Victor Ruiz – Villarreal
The Villarreal player is the cheapest player on our list at 5m. He has picked up 39 points up until now this season. He has made 21 starts for the Yellow Submarines this season and has managed nine clean sheets.
