La Liga Defender Club Review – Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid managed to grab the third spot at the end of the domestic season, but overall, it can be said that they had quite an underwhelming domestic season.

Los Rojiblancos have become used to competing for the domestic honours of late; however, they never looked like challenging for the league title last season. Atletico ended the season with 78 points – a massive 15 points behind winners Real Madrid.
Diego Simeone’s ended well short of the pace this season, but the same can’t be said about their defence. A solid defence is a key characteristic of Simeone’s side, and same was the case this season.

Atletico conceded only 27 goals and finished the season with the best defence in the league. In comparison, Real Madrid conceded 41 goals and Barcelona let in 37 goals.

Let’s take a detailed look at how Atletico defence functioned during the season.

Such was domination of Atletico defenders in EuroFantasyLeague last season, that only one non-Atletico defender could find a place among top six defenders of the league.

Filipe Luis ended the season as the best defender in La Liga. His tally of 102 points from 34 starts was enough to land him the top spot on our list. Besides his impressive total of points, a lower price tag made Luis a must-have in La Liga fantasy. He was available for just 7.5m in the market. He was a part of 18 clean sheets for Atletico. The 31-year-old also made a significant contribution on the attack front and ended the season with three goals and six assists.

Diego Godin managed a respectable total of 79 points from 31 appearances. However, the Uruguayan was slightly expensive at 10m. Besides 17 clean sheets, he was also responsible for three goals and one assist. He also picked up one red card.

Stefan Savic also enjoyed quite an impressive campaign and ended the season with 71 points. The 7m-man was a part of 16 clean sheets and also contributed with a goal and an assist. Like Godin, he also received one red card during the season.

Due to injury issues, veteran right back Juanfran could only manage 23 appearances during the season, and this reflects in his point total of 55. The 32-year-old was available at a hefty price of 9m in the market. He was a part of 12 clean sheets and also provided a couple of assists.

Gimenez, available at a modest price of 6.5m, picked up 54 points from 17 appearances. Next up is Lucas Hernandez on our list with 39 points. The French centre-back made 15 appearances during the season and managed nine clean sheets. The 21-year-old was available for just 3.5m in the market.

Sime Vrsaljko, also available at 3.5m, is the last name on our list with 36 points. He managed a total of 14 appearances during the season.
