Premier League Defender Club Review – Chelsea

Marcos Alonso
Chelsea’s success in the Roman Abramovich era has been mostly built on a solid defence, and it was no different for Antonio Conte’s side last season.

The Blues made a solid start to life under Conte before succumbing to back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal in September, and that prompted the Italian manager to switch to a 3-4-3 system. As they say, the rest is history. Following the change in the system, the Blues rarely looked back on their way to the league title.

Summer-signing Marcos Alonso was the standout player for the Blues, and he finished with most points player for any Chelsea player in EuroFantasyLeague. The likes of Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz were also excellent for the champions.

Here’s a look at how Chelsea’s defenders fared in EuroFantasyLeague last season:

As previously mentioned, Alonso was the best Chelsea player over the course of the season. He made 33 appearances and finished the season with 101 points. Besides playing a part in 16 clean sheets, he also contributed with six goals and three assists from his wing-back position. He was available for just 2m at the start of the season and finished the season with an astounding P/P score of 53.

Cahill, who was quite expensive at 10m, finished the season with 90 points. He managed 16 clean sheets in 37 performances and also scored six goals. Understandably, Cahill’s P/P score was lower than Alonso’s at 9.5.

Spanish full-back Cesar Azpilicueta mostly played as a part of the back-three last season. He was available for 8.5m, and he finished the season with a decent total of 77 points. He started every league game of the campaign and managed 16 clean sheets. He failed to score a goal but did provide a solitary assist.

David Luiz re-joined the Blues from PSG in a big-money move last summer. The Brazilian exceeded everyone’s expectations and was defensively solid in Conte’s new system. He was available for 8.2m and put together 72 points. Besides 17 clean sheets, he scored a single goal for his side.

Club legend John Terry could manage only nine appearances in his last season with the West London club. The veteran centre-back, who was unreasonably priced at 10m, was part of three clean sheets and also scored a goal. He finished the season with ten points.

Young right back Ola Aina earned eight points from his substitute appearances for the Blues. He was available for 4.5m in the market.

French centre-back Kurt Zouma made his long-awaited return from his cruciate injury in February. He made nine appearances, but only three of those came as starts. The 6m centre-back finished the season with four points.

Nathan Ake spent the first half of the last season on loan at Bournemouth before re-joining the Blues in January. He could manage only four points for the Blues from a total of two appearances.
