La Liga Striker Club Review – Deportivo La Coruna

Florin Andone
Deportivo La Coruna didn’t really cover themselves in glory this season and could manage a total of just 36 points. This point total would have seen them relegated last season, but it was enough to land them the 16th position this season.
Following the departure of Lucas Perez to Arsenal last summer, Deportivo struggled to score goals last season and could manage just 43 goals. They finished the season with a terrible run of two wins in 11 games, but the lack of any real relegation battle saw them comfortably survive the drop in the end.

Deportivo’s attacking stats in EuroFantasyLeague clearly suggest that the La Liga side desperately need another proven goalscorer, and if the reports are to be believed, they are trying to bring back Perez this summer.
Only four strikers represented Deportivo in EuroFantasyLeague last season, and only one of them managed to touch double figures in terms of goals. Let’s have a look at how these strikers fared overall.

Romania international Florin Andone, who had arrived at Deportivo in a €4.7m deal from Cordoba in the summer of 2016, was Deportivo’s main striker during the season. The 24-year-old made 32 starts and five more appearances from the bench. He scored 12 goals and provided a couple of assists for his side. He was available for 5m and finished the season with a decent total of 46 points. His point tally means that he was the best performing Deportivo player in EuroFantasyLeague. He also had an impressive P/P score of 10.

Stoke City forward Joselu spent the last season on loan at Deportivo. The Spaniard missed the major chunk of the first half of the season with an Achilles injury and could manage only 20 appearances with just nine starts. He was quite decent in the second half of the season and also scored a crucial goal in the 2-1 win over Barcelona in March. Overall, the 27-year-old scored five goals and provided an assist for his side.

Ola John arrived from Benfica on a loan deal in the month of January. He could manage only three starts and a further eight appearances from the bench. He was available for 6.5m in the market, but he couldn’t do justice to his price tag as he ended the season without a goal and just one assist. He finished the season with just one point.

Manchester City loanee Marlos Moreno managed 19 appearances for Deportivo; however, only nine came as starts. He was available for 3m, and he failed to score a goal or provide an assist. The 20-year-old finished the season without any points on the board.
