Serie A Best Team to Pick – Round 20

The next Serie A round on paper favours Napoli and Juventus: here are the suggest players to pick.

José Reina: Napoli have the second-best defence in the League and the second-best home one, having conceded only six goals at San Paolo so far. They will host Hellas Verona, who play way better in front of their crowd.

Silvan Widmer: he was the player of the month last week. Udinese have another good opportunity on Friday as they will face Chievo, which have lost four of their last five game and might be without their leading scorer Roberto Inglese.

Stephan Lichtsteiner: he had an assist in the last game and could be in position to earn some bonus points as Juventus travel to Sardinia, because Cagliari might be without their top two choices at left wing back. He should feature from the start because his competitors, Mattia De Sciglio and Stefano Sturaro, are hurt.

Ibrahima Mbaye: Bologna will face Torino, which will miss several of their top players and will be in flux after the coaching change.. He has been a reliable contributor this season.

Dries Mertens: he finally resumed scoring in Coppa Italia against Atalanta, so hopefully the monkey is off his back and he can start producing in Serie A as well. The match-up is certainly inviting, as Hellas Verona have conceded 19 times in 9 road games.

Hakan Calhanoglu: he scored a precious goal against Fiorentina and finally looked healthy. He should start on Saturday as Milan will take on Crotone, which have lost in six of their last seven games and are generally very leaky in the back.

Lorenzo Pellegrini: Roma might punish Radja Nainggolan by benching him for a game after that New Year’s Eve video. Pellegrini is starting to flourish as he is getting more and more playing time and he has found the back of the net twice in his last four games. Atalanta’s defence is not airtight, especially on the road.

Jordan Veretout: Fiorentina are in decent form, but they are still without a signature win so far this season. They will try to achieve that as they square off against Inter, who have been mediocre in the last month. He has been a constant force in the Viola’s midfield.

Gonzalo Higuain: he had the night off in Coppa Italia and so he will fresh and ready to do damage spearheading Juventus’ attack against Cagliari, which have kept only one clean sheet at home and have often conceded multiple times.

Ciro Immobile: Spal are pugnacious, but they have allowed multiple scores in four of their last five Serie A fixtures. The striker will be in the thick of it as he always is.

Fabio Quagliarella: he was the best striker in December and somehow managed to muster a brace also against Spal in the final minutes. Benevento finally won their first game, but they still possess the worst scoring defence in the League.
