Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 38

Standings implications: Inter saved best for last as they sunk Atalanta, securing the second place and closing one point shy of Juventus, which did not bother showing up against Roma. Lazio stayed in fourth as they were bested by Napoli. In the relegation zone, Lecce went down in typical chaotic fashion versus Parma, while Genoa’s win over Verona was never in doubt and so the Salentini are the final team to move back to Serie B.

In the meaningless portion of the schedule, Milan kept it going against Cagliari, Udinese picked up a quality win over Sassuolo, Bologna shared the spoils Torino, Sampdoria with Brescia.

Confirmations: Ciro Immobile knocked one more through, tying but not surpassing Gonzalo Higuain’s all-time record of 36 goals in a season. Zlatan Ibrahimovic got a PK saved but then found the target again. Gianluca Lapadula netted his fourth goal in as many rounds but it was not enough to save his team. Lorenzo Insigne, Simone Zaza, Higuain and Gianluca Caprari scored for the second time in their last four appearances, Matteo Politano instead in his last five. Stefano Okaka brought his seasonal tally to seven goals. Diego Perotti and Nikola Kalinic took full advantage of the relaxed nature of the Juventus clash and the Argentinian attacker even assembled a brace. Danilo D’Ambrosio and Ashley Young are no longer surprises as the former hit the net for the second round in a row, the Englishman for the fourth time since January.

Surprise scorers: Sampdoria’s Mehdi Leris, Lecce’s Biagio Meccariello and Bologna’s Mattias Svanberg notched their first goal in Serie A, Cristiano Romero his first of the season.

Guess who is back: Antonio Sanabria returned with a bang as his two-fer powered Genoa in a monumental W. Andreas Cornelius found the target right away after coming back from an injury and he had last done it in the first post-resumption game. Roberto Inglese clocked in as well. Fabian Ruiz finally put one past the goalie after an eternity, even though he had been playing well. Same thing for Samu Castillejo, who missed time with an injury. Ernesto Torregrossa resurfaced after five rounds. Antonin Barak had last hit the net in February.

Flops of the round: despite the big stage, Lecce were killed by the usual defensive woes. Fabio Quagliarella missed a PK, while Ragnar Klavan had an unfortunate own goal and struggled mightily like the rest of the Cagliari defence in San Siro. A clumsy Fabio Lucioni’s attempted clearance ended up in his own net to put Lecce in an early hole. Atalanta coughed up the Inter game and did not muster much offense.

Clutch goal: it was early, but the most meaningful goal of the slate was Sanabria’s diving header that paved the way for Genoa.
