El gol amarillo

sansone

Are Leicester Out Of The Relegation Mire?

We’ve all seen it happen before; team in danger of relegation, manager fired, team goes on a run that sees them stay up. In fact, we even have managers that specialize in this great escape. But rarely have we seen a club go through so many changes in fortune as Leicester have done in the last two years.

This is a club that was staring down the barrel of relegation in April 2015 before going on a run that saw them take 19 points out 24 available in the last eight matches of the season. Their top flight status secured, all looked peachy at the King Power Stadium until that video in Thailand saw then manager Nigel Pearson’s son dismissed along with two other players. Pearson’s relationship with the owners never recovered, and he was soon replaced by Claudio Ranieri, and we all know what happened next.

For ten glorious months, Vardy et al. reminded us what the modern game was missing. It was a spectacular season that we might never see the like of again. Leicester had found their manager, and he had found his team. It’s an overused phrase, but this really was a match made in heaven.

Then it all went wrong.

This season Leicester have only shown glimpses of the form that won them the league, and it begs the question; What is going on? Did the footballing Gods decree that enough was enough and put Leicester firmly back in their place? Or was it that the players simply stopped listening to their manager?

Whatever the reason, the entire squad, with the exception of Kasper Schmeichel, seemed to forget how to play football. Unfortunately, the buck stops with the manager, and no matter how callous it may have seemed, the owners had no choice. It was either demote half the squad to the reserves or fire Ranieri, and while it wouldn’t have been easy, it now looks like they made the right choice.

Nine points and nine goals in the three Premier League games since Shakespeare took over the reins from Ranieri tells its own story. This is a team that couldn’t hit a barn door for much of the season but are now scoring for fun. They even scored a couple against Sevilla to set up a Champions League quarter-final with Atletico Madrid while they were at it.

Say what you will about the reasons for Ranieri’s sacking, the fact is that Leicester are a different team now that the Italian has left the club. While no one in their right footballing mind believes that Shakespeare has introduced a new and innovative training regimen that has lifted the club out of the mire, Leicester are looking pretty good to stay up. BetStars currently has them at 25/1 for the drop which is a big change from the 5/2 they were not so long ago. In fact, these are the same odds you would have got at the start of the season.

Are they out of the mire? Not yet. They’re still ten points short of the magical 40 which should ensure their survival and who knows, perhaps they’ll forget how to score again, but it seems unlikely.

To the objective observer, there has never been a more clear-cut case of player power at its worst. Whatever went on with Ranieri, the players weren’t playing for him and in doing so put the club at risk of relegation. And now that they have their new manager, they’re back to winning ways, let’s just hope for the fans that it stays that way.

Arsene Wenger set to stay at Arsenal

Arsene-Wenger-700x367

Despite relentless pressure from a section of his own fans, it seems that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will be set to stay with the Gunners, a team he has managed for 21 years.

A lack of trophies- just 2 FA Cups in the past decade and Wenger’s worst league form since he took the reigns of the club in 1996 has seen calls for the Frenchman to be dismissed or to walk away.

Last weekend fans organised two planes before the game with West Bromwich Albion. One asked for Wenger to leave the other to stay, and summed up perfectly that there is no unity even between fans.

Arsenal lost again and the club is now two points off of a top 4 place and a Champions League berth, something that they have achieved for the past 20 seasons under Wenger. Never has a manager had such the luxury of Wenger, deciding even under immense pressure and a lack of trophies what he will do with his future. True we could point to Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson in the same category, but the Scotsman continued to win trophies.

Arsenal forward Oliver Giroud appeared to quash any rumours that the players had lost faith in Wenger, Giroud told Canal Plus, ” We want him to renew his contract, to continue his adventure, because we support him. We hope we can win the Cup and that Arsenal qualify for the Champions League.”

Wenger’s fighting chance is that Arsenal are still competing this season. Sure the league is dust, gone and zipped, be it what you call it but Arsenal are into the semi finals of the FA Cup where they will play Manchester City. That game has turned into one of the matches of the season, considering City manager Pep Guardiola’s struggles this term.

There is also the fight for a top 4 finish, and with Chelsea looking good for the title there is a genuine fight between 2nd and 5th that could well go down to the wire.

So if Wenger does stay there seems to be a couple of options open to him. The first is that he signs his original renewable contract of 2 more years, the second option is that he signs a one year contract and confirms at the same time that next season will be his final one. If he does the latter he may just appease even the strongest of opposer’s, but if Arsenal fail to qualify for the Champions League, Wenger could exit the Gunners with more of a whimper than a bang.

Los cuartos más efervescentes

vardy

4 must watch European football matches this weekend

31E277F200000578-3477957-Harry_Kine_throws_away_his_protective_mask_after_scoring_a_stunn-a-75_1457187346022

It’s going to be another exciting weekend in Europe as the season draws even nearer to a close with still so much up for grabs, be it winning titles or hanging onto to top flight status.

Below are 4 must watch games from this weekend that will be grabbing our attention.

Premier league: Manchester City v Liverpool (Sunday)

It’s not been a good week for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who were dumped out of the Champions League by Monaco, despite scoring 6 goals over two legs. The pressure is mounting on the Spaniard to at least achieve a top 4 finish. Currently City have 56 points and are in a prime position for European football next season. But things in football can change very quickly and a defeat here after a European exit could start a downward trend for the Citizens.

As for Liverpool they have blown hot and cold this season and yet they are just a point behind City though they have played a game more. It’s still up in the air for Jurgen Klopp’s team if they will finish in the top 4, but the ball is in their court. This game will be a nervy tense affair, we expect to see yellow cards distributed by the bucket load.

Premier league: Tottenham v Southampton (Sunday)

Tottenham have been superb this season and yet they still find themselves in 2nd place and a huge 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea. This fixture is another that they must win and it should be a cracking match at White Hart Lane. Southampton have been in great form and their recent EFL Cup final loss has not fazed them one bit.

However Tottenham have a superb record at home where they remain undefeated and will want to keep that record up. In short they can’t afford to drop any points with still no guarantee at this point of the season of even a top 4 finish.

La Liga: Barcelona v Valencia (Sunday)

Barcelona’s shock loss to Deportivo last weekend really opened up the league for their rivals Real Madrid, and this is a must win game for Lionel Messi and co. Valencia have been under par this season but always raise their game against the better teams and we should be in for a very enjoyable game filled hopefully with goals. This match will tell us a lot about Barca and if they still have the fight in them to take this title down to the wire.

Ligue 1: PSG v Lyon (Sunday)

PSG are still chasing for a fifth straight Ligue 1 title, but they must overcome Monaco who are leading by 3 points and are showing no signs of letting up. PSG still have the hangovers of their stunning exit at the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League but will face the mighty Lyon in Paris on Sunday.

Lyon themselves have just qualified for the quarter finals of the Europa League and are clinging on in 4th position in Ligue 1 for a final European place. They have all the motivation they would need to win this match. As for PSG, coach Unai Emery will hope his side can show their qualities and advance with all three points to keep the pressure up at the top of the table.

Pressure Mounts on Pep

pep

Pep Guardiola became the youngest manager ever to win the Champions League when he led Barcelona to triumph in season 2008-09. He won it again in 2010-11 with Barcelona, however, since then his best position in the competition has been the semi-finals with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

When he was appointed Manchester City manager in the summer, it was believed that he could take Manchester City further in the competition they have been lacking in, namely, the Champions League. City’s best performance in the tournament came last season when they were eliminated in the semi-final, going out to Real Madrid 1-0 on aggregate. Better things were hoped for this season but group results, whilst qualifying in second place behind Barcelona, their results were not overly impressive.

They failed to beat Celtic in both matches, bearing in mind this was a Celtic side who were thrashed 7-0 in the Camp Nou, and won only two matches, but their points total of nine was enough to secure 2nd in the group and a place in the knock-out stages.

When drawn against Monaco in the last 16, they surely thought they could progress and in a thrilling tie which finished 6-6, Manchester City were eliminated on the away-goals rule. Two goals from Aguero in the first leg gave them a 5-3 lead in one of the most open and exciting matches seen at the City of Manchester Stadium in a long time, and they would have been reasonably confident going into the second leg with a 2 goal lead. However, with Monaco opening the scoring in the second leg with just 8 minutes gone through Kylian Mbappe, the pressure was well and truly on. They managed to pull a goal back through Leroy Sane, however, they only held onto qualification for 8 minutes as Monaco scored to make it 3-1 on the night and send Manchester City crashing out.

Realistically, their only hope of silverware this season is now the FA Cup. City trail Chelsea by 10 points in the Premier League and this weekend they face Liverpool at home, a team they haven’t beaten in their last four attempts. A loss at the weekend would see them fall to 4th in the Premier League, and given that in his whole managerial career, Pep Guardiola has never finished outside the top two, the pressure is well and truly on.

El gol «made in Spain»
