Top La Liga Strikers in 2018/19: Lionel Messi

leo-messi(1)

The different descriptions of how to praise such genius ran out a long time ago and it is no surprise to see Lionel Messi ranked as the best La Liga striker of the season. He didn’t just amass more points he engulfed and controlled that position so that the next nearest striker, Karim Benzema was a cool 75 points behind him.

Personally for Messi it was another terrific season, true it could have been better as Barcelona ‘only’ won the league this season but the magician from Argentina still scored 36 goals in the league and assisted in another 13. That means that he was involved in 49 of Barcelona’s 90 goals, so well over 50% which is simply a stunning statistic.

Messi could have been yours this season but he would of cost the most out of every other player and was valued at 20m. He did end up collecting a huge 172 points though which as you’ve probably guessed was good enough to be ranked number 1 right across the board from strikers to any other player in any other position in any other major league. Whew! are we lucky to be able to witness his greatness in our lifetimes.

Messi started the season in fantastic fashion earning 20 points in his first 3 games including 12 alone when Barca beat Huesca 8-2 at the Camp Nou on matchday 3. In that game Messi scored 2 goals and two assists so even if that match was involved in 50% of the goals.

There were only 6 times when Messi failed to score a point and on two of those occasions the club had already won the league and so were concentrating on other competitions including the final stages of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey final.

Messi scored some huge points in games that other players could only dream about, 14 against Real Betis and 16 against Sevilla. But that wasn’t even his biggest haul, no that was saved for the game against Levante where Barcelona were playing away. The game finished 5-0 to Barca and Messi scored a hat-trick plus got two assists so was involved in every goal. To top that he picked up an extra 2 points as a bonus for getting the hat-trick.

The plaudits have long run out for him but he still amazes and seems one of the main reasons to watch La Liga football. Despite his attacking greatness it is also worth noting his disciplinary. This is important given in fantasy football how points can be lost and Messi was shown the yellow card just 2 times this season in the league.

It was another season where Messi made scoring hat-tricks seem normal and scored some fantastic goals once again, proving he is one of the greatest players ever to play the game. He will be back next season where he will most likely be the most expensive purchase but can your team really live without him?

Huesca relegated as Valencia continue push for Champions League qualification

Valencia

Valencia turned on the style to hit Huesca for six, confirming relegation for the bottom-of-the-league side in the process.

Marcelino’s team bounced back from their 3-1 Europa League semi-final first leg defeat at Arsenal in the best possible way.

It took just two minutes for the away side to take the lead. Daniel Wass was allowed far too much space on the edge of the box before putting his shot past Roberto Santamaria in the Huesca goal.

In the 16th minute, Rodrigo raced onto Santa Mina’s pass to round the ‘keeper and roll the ball in to make it 2-0 to Valencia. Continue reading

Relegation gap begins to widen in La Liga

aspas

As we head into the international break, the relegation picture in La Liga looks to be a little clearer, with ten games remaining in the 2018-19 campaign.

Weekend wins for Real Valladolid and Villarreal, with the latter beating relegation rivals Rayo Vallecano, has opened up a four point gap between 17th and 18th in the table.

Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano and Huseca are now all cut adrift of Sergio Gonzalez’s Valladolid side.

Huesca dare to dream of the greatest escape

Huesca

Huesca are the latest provincial Spanish club to enjoy a remarkable rise through the ranks in recent years. In 2008, they reached the second tier for the first time in their history. In 2017, they recorded their first top half finish in the campaign and, last year, they won promotion to the Primera for the first time ever.

Their first win did not take long – a 2-1 victory at Eibar on the opening day. A rousing comeback the following game against Athletic Bilbao rescued a point at San Mames and, for 13 glorious minutes, they led at the Camp Nou against Barcelona. But they lost that game 8-2 – the second of a 16-match streak in which they could not land a league victory. Continue reading

Relegation writing looks to be on the wall for Huesca

Huesca

With La Liga set to resume for 2019, over the weekend of January 5th-6th, bottom of the table Huesca could realistically already be relegated.

The side from Aragon, who were promoted to La Liga from the Segunda for the first time in their history, have won just one game all season.

That sole victory, away to Eibar, on the opening day of the season seems an age ago to Huesca fans, who are preparing themselves for a tough 2019.

Luckless Huesca stay bottom of La Liga

Huesca

Huesca’s poor run of recent results continued last weekend, with a 2-2 draw at home to Levante stretching their run of La Liga games without a win to 12.

However the results tell a somewhat unbalanced story of Huesca’s season, and in particular their recent performances in La Liga.

The club took the bold step of sacking manager Leo Franco, despite overseeing their first ever promotion to the Spanish top flight, in October, replacing him with former Cordoba boss Francisco Rodriguez.

Huesca making waves on La Liga debut

Huesca

La Liga always possessed a fantasic ability to present new teams to follow, away from the leading lights of the Spanish top flight, and so far this season it has been all about Huesca.

The side from a small city in the community of Aragon, with smallest stadium ever to play in La Liga, has laid down an unbeaten marker in their first ever top tier games.

An opening day 2-1 win away at Eibar caused plenty to sit up and take notice of the newly promoted side, but a 2-2 draw in Week Two at Athletic Bilbao has really raised a few eyebrows.
