One of the most intriguing fixtures in La Liga Game Week 22 will be between two lesser known sides from the Spanish capital – Rayo Vallecano and Leganes.
The sides from South Madrid face each other on Monday night, in what could be a decisive battle in the fight to avoid relegation.
The two sides are just 17km apart, however local rivalry will not be on the only thing on the line at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas, with the season edging towards its final third.
With the latest round of La Liga taking place this past weekend, it is now time to cast our minds back and see which players performed their roles the best for their clubs. There were, as always, some quality games on display – Barcelona losing for only the second time this season at home to Real Betis was something of a shock, while Real Madrid made it two wins on the bounce with their 4-2 win at Celta Vigo. We will be adopting a 4-3-3 this week, so let’s get to it.
Estadi Montilivi was the place to be seen in La Liga this past weekend, with Girona losing at home against Eibar in a five-goal thriller. Brazilian forward Charles had given the visitors the lead from the penalty spot, before two goals from Cristhian Stuani late in the first half briefly turned the game in the hosts’ favour. Anaitz Arbilla levelled up deep into injury time, before a second half goal from Sergi Enrich allowed the guests to leapfrog Girona in the table, shooting up to 12th. Elsewhere, Alaves recorded a hugely impressive 1-0 home win over Real Madrid, while Barcelona were held at Valencia. Two weekends ago, Barcelona recorded a massive 8-2 victory over Huesca and Celta Vigo earn an impressive home win against Atletico Madrid, this weekend’s lineup is shaping up quite nicely. Atletico will be looking to get things back on track as they host Eibar, while Espanyol hosting Levante could be well worth a watch considering both sides’ early season form. GK - Tomás Vaclik (Sevilla)
Tomás Vaclik was one of only several goalkeepers in La Liga to keep a clean sheet this weekend, but at just 4m was the cheapest (tied with Diego Lopez of Espanyol). Sevilla drew 0-0 at home against Villarreal – good result.
Longevity and continuity in football are increasingly rare aspects in football. ‘One club’ players are becoming increasingly rare while on a management level, clubs are becoming increasingly impatient with a lack of instant success. Coach Asier Garitano’s decision to leave Leganes at the end of the season ends a marriage which had brought plenty of joy to both parties.
Garitano took the reins in 2013, with the Madrid-based club in the regionalised third tier of Spanish football. He achieved promotion in his first season and in his third, guided Lega to their first ever stint in the top flight. Such is the nature of the Spanish media’s obsession with Real Madrid, the achievement of the club who had eliminated them from this season’s Copa del Rey was initially overlooked. Before this year’s Copa del Rey quarter-finals, Zinedine Zidane had only overseen one cup exit for his side – the defeat to Celta Vigo at the same stage the previous year. It was a stunning achievement from Leganes: their first ever appearance in the Copa quarters brought about their first ever defeat of Madrid and their first semi-final. Last week, they drew their first leg 1-1 with Sevilla – a club competing in their 12th semi-final in 12 years.
Sometimes it is important to step back to comprehend the significance of the job carried out by Lega’s Coach Asier Garitano. Appointed in 2013, his led the club to only their second ever stint in Spain’s second tier in his debut season and two years later, their first ever promotion to La Liga. Eso es fruto de la gran labor que han llevado a cabo sus porteros y sus defensas. Estos son los mejores porteros y defensas de esta jornada en la Liga.
Porteros
Uzoho (Deportivo)
El cancerbero (el cuarto deportivista que juega esta temporada tras solo 8 jornadas disputadas) fue clave para evitar que los armeros anotasen un solo gol ante su afición. El partido fue un poco insulso, pero lo mejor fueron las actuaciones bajo los tres palos, ya que varias paradas suyas fueron vitales en un partido que terminó con empate a cero.
Dmitrovic (Éibar)
En el mismo partido, pero en la portería de enfrente, hubo otro portero que destacó por sus actuaciones. El serbio defendió bien los tres palos para que los visitantes no se llevaran más que un punto de Ipurúa.
Cuellar (Leganés)
El portero pepinero se vuelve a colocar en esta lista exclusiva con los mejores porteros de cada semana. El Leganés hizo un partido sobrio en todos los aspectos del juego. Y en la portería, tras evitar todas las ocasiones del conjunto malacitano, no es una excepción.
Defensas
Elustondo (Real Sociedad)
El defensa fue, sin duda alguna, el mejor jugador del encuentro en el derbi vasco. Además de defender perfectamente su posición en las líneas centrales, marcó el gol que sentenció el encuentro y le dio los 3 puntos a los donostiarras.
Siovas (Leganés)
El excepcional partido de los pepineros se vuelve a merecer a otro jugador clave. En esta ocasión, el defensa Siovas, quien se mostró muy sobrio en defensa para ayudar a mantener la portería a cero y controlar del partido.
Odriozola (Real Sociedad)
Misma dinámica. El lateral diestro completa su mes fantástico tras debutar con la Roja, ya que además fue el encargado de abrir el marcador en Mendizorroza. Que dos defensas hayan sido los únicos en anotar los goles del encuentro, indica el tipo de juego que desplegó la Real Sociedad. Un juego sobrio y seguro.
El centro del campo es el equilibrio perfecto para gestionar la defensa y coordinar el ataque. Sino que se lo digan a los 5 mejores centrocampistas de la octava jornada de la Liga española. Sin ellos, sus respectivos equipos no habrían logrado llevarse los 3 puntos para dar un pequeño salto en la clasificación.
Szymanowski (Leganés)
Un partido soberbio del argentino al que puso la guinda con un gol que sentenció el partido. Control, técnica y destellos de calidad. No se le puede pedir más a una de las estrellas del conjunto pepinero que esta temporada está lanzado.
Gabriel Pires (Leganés)
La victoria pepinera tuvo otro personaje clave. El brasileño abrió la lata en la Rosaleda y demostró templanza y calidad durante los 90 minutos. El centro del campo fue la llave que necesitó el Leganés para ganar un merecido partido.
Mikel Vesga (Athletic de Bilbao)
Gracias al gol de Vesga, los leones recuperan la senda de la victoria tras un bache de resultados negativos. Se estrenó como goleador con un tanto valiente que su afición le supo reconocer. Y no pudo hacerlo ante mejor rival, un Sevilla fallón en sus últimas dos salidas importantes.
Pione Sisto (Celta)
El extremo del Celta está cuajando una temporada magnífica. En esta ocasión, no fue capaz de anotar ningún gol para su equipo. No obstante, dio dos asistencia que fueron claves para que los gallegos se llevaran los tres puntos de Gran Canaria. Sisto es una de nuestras apuestas más claras para EFL.
Javi Eraso (Leganés)
Se vuelve a colar otro jugador más del Leganés en este listado. El centrocampista no anotó ningún gol, no obstante manejó el partido en todo momento desde sus botas. Eraso se está haciendo con un merecido hueco en el once titular de uno de los equipos más duros de roer en este inicio de campeonato.
