Rayo will fight La Liga relegation to the last day

Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid

Rayo Vallecano’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid in Vallecas sparked epic scenes in the crowd at full time, as they beat their city rivals in La Liga for the first time 22 years.

However, more importantly, it gives Paco Jemez’s side a real chance of staying in the top flight – with the confidence that result can give.

The Mexican boss was clear post-match that defeat to Zinedine Zidane’s side would have meant an immediate return to the Segunda – but this win will give hope.

Rayo Vallecano aiming to keep relegation fate in their own hands

Rayo Vallecano

With the La Liga 2018-19 season entering its final stages, there is still plenty to be decided, particularly in the bottom half of the table.

As it stands, ahead of Game Week 26, there are realistically still nine teams that could be drawn into a relegation battle, with points available to sides that are in a position to take them.

The recent form of rock bottom, and seemingly doomed, Huesca – who have won two and drawn two of their last five league games – demonstrates how quickly the  league can change.

Rayo Vallecano relying on home form to ease relegation fears
