Serie A Team of the Week – Round 29

vicari

Juan Musso (7 points): a fairly good amount of clean sheets in this round, as seven teams managed to hold the opponent scoreless. Among the goalkeepers that succeeded, Musso had the finest performance, including a superhuman save on a point-blank header where he snatched the ball just before it crossed the goal line.

Francesco Vicari (9 points): his season has been up-and-down and he has often ridden the pine, but he came up big on Sunday, burying a pretty header by masterfully attacking the near post on a corner kick and gifting a very significant win to his side. Continue reading

Serie A Club of the Round – Cagliari

cagliari

In a round where few top teams squared off against each other, Cagliari ended up having the most impressive outing of the weekend. They had a brutal record on the road thus far, but partly atoned in the match-up against Chievo, which at this point is a boon for everybody. They had won in the last three home matches, keeping the relegation strugglers at bay. Rolando Maran picked Cyril Thereau to replace the suspended Leonardo Pavoletti, recovered Luca Pellegrini on the left flank and confirmed Fabrizio Cacciatore over Darijo Srna on the other one. Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 29

mandragora

Standings implications: they did it in opposite fashion, but Juventus and Napoli both took home the full spoils in this round. Inter were bested by Lazio, Milan by Sampdoria and therefore the Biancocelesti and Atalanta moved closer to the fourth spot. The Orobici leapfrogged Roma, while Sampdoria now share the eight spot with Torino, which tied in Florence. Cagliari prevailed for the third time in the last four fixtures, this time versus Chievo, and are eight point clear of the 18th spot, which is now occupied by Empoli that have been overtaken by Bologna as result of a dramatic victory. Udinese and SPAL kept their slim lead with Ws against Genoa and Frosinone.

Confirmations: Duvan Zapata took advantage of few elite strikers being shut out to pull closer to the top of the scorers’ chart thanks to a brace.  Continue reading

The two German players could return within a couple of weeks, the Italian winger sooner.

Serie A Club of the Week – Round 37: Cagliari

cagliari

There was not any large victory in the last round: while Napoli would have been a more than qualified candidate for the shout-out thanks to their two-nothing win over Sampdoria on the road, but Cagliari get it this time for their colossal result against Fiorentina. Prior to the trip to Artemio Franchi, the Sardinian had won just once in their last eight fixtures and therefore freefell in the standings. They looked doomed as they dropped to third-to-last and had a tough schedule down the stretch. However, as it often happens, desperate teams manage to pull out surprise wins in uphill matches.  Continue reading
