Serie A Best XI – Round Four

Jesse Joronen (7 points): the best performances belonged to goalkeepers who ended up conceding anyway in this round. Brescia were the only one to keep a clean sheet on the road over the weekend, not counting Inter, and the Finnish giant contributed with a nice save on a wicked Mato Jajalo free kick.

Adam Marusic (9 points): the arrival of Manuel Lazzari cut into his playing time, so he has to make the most of the opportunities he is given. He succeeded against Parma, keeping his aplomb in front of the goalie and slotting it home after a deep cut. Continue reading

Lazio’s investment in two of Europe’s top crossers solves a major headache for Simone Inzaghi

IMG_1556

It’s been quite the summer of spending in Serie A, with many of the league’s big guns splashing out large sums to overhaul their squads ahead of the 2019/20 season.

That has never been Lazio’s style during Claudio Lotito’s presidency and although a reasonable amount of money has been invested in the market this summer, it has been put towards just three players: Denis Vavro, Jony and Manuel Lazzari.

The capital club’s dealings have been an example of intelligently conducted business in a market that so often leans more towards emotion and desperation than prudence and planning. Continue reading

Lazio sign Manuel Lazzari from SPAL

lazzari

Lazio have plucked one of the best players out of the minnows: Manuel Lazzari from SPAL. In his first two seasons in Serie A, the 25-year-old Italian wing back has been a force to be reckoned with on the right flank, serving as his team’s main playmaker, notching nine assists and scoring two times in 69 matches. On top of paying around €10 Alessandro Murgia returned to the Estensi as part of the deal.

He has been in Ferrara since 2012, when the team was called Giacomense and was playing in the fourth league. He was a big part of their rise up to Serie A, amassing 182 appearances in six seasons and posting 23 assists. He has also one cap with Italy. Continue reading

Serie A Team of the Week – Round 28

alberto

Andrei Radu (7 points): there was just one clean sheet in this round and amazingly it was the top scoring offence, Juventus’ one, that got shackled, so the Genoa goalie was the only one to bring home seven points and he did not even had to sweat too much to do it.

Domenico Criscito (5 points): he gets the token spot for the Griffon’s back-line, which featured all the highest earners among defenders, for his diligent work on both phases. He has been a crossing machine after switching to left back. Continue reading

Serie A Club of the Round – Lazio

lazio

Despite failing to earn a shutout win due to a schoolboy error, Lazio had by far the most dominating performance in the round and vanquished Parma with a magnificent first half.

They came into the game looking to redeem themselves after a slightly disappointing tie in Florence, where they could have easily won the game with more precision and more intensity, especially in the second half, while they squashed Roma in the Derby two weeks ago. Continue reading

Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 28

mertens

Standings implications: Juventus dropped their first game in Genoa, while Napoli tamed Udinese and so the lead yo-yoes back to 15 points. Inter resurrected at the most opportune time and torpedoed Milan in the Derby della Madonnina, reclaiming the third spot. Roma did not take advantage as they had a poor showing in Ferrara. It was a good week for Lazio, as they demolished Parma, while Atalanta got stymied by Chievo and Torino came up empty-handed against Bologna. In the lower districts, mammoth wins for the Felsinei, SPAL and Empoli, who sunk Frosinone in the head-to-head bout. Udinese fell back in the mud, as they are now just two points above the Felsinei. Cagliari kept the opponents at bay with a precious W against Fiorentina.
